Loretta Lynn was born Loretta Webb in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. Young Loretta grew up in a poverty-stricken, Appalachian coal-mining town. She was the second of eight children. One of her sisters, Brenda Gayle Webb, later became a country music star in her own right known to the world as Crystal Gayle. Loretta got married at age 13 to Mooney Lynn, a 21-year-old coal miner with whom she had four children by the time Loretta was 18.
