I have (had) a moderate number of large logs in my yard from dead trees that had been take down. With this log splitter, I've been able to convert them into firewood. This product isn't for anyone who wants to split logs as fast as possible or doesn't want to put any physical effort into it. I'm in no hurry, and I don't mind a little upper body exercise (I'm 60). Over a few weekends in the last couple of months, I've been able to turn dozens of logs into firewood. I've split close to a face cord so far. Note, this log splitter will split logs MUCH larger than its 6.5 inch specifications would indicate. I'm including a picture of a typical sized log that I've split (about 16 inches in diameter. It takes several passes of splitting the log into smaller and smaller pieces, but I was able to split the log in this picture in less than 10 minutes into about 8 small pieces. A great product, I highly recommend it.
Easy to use. I'm 67. Gives me a little exercise and safer than my axe.
I dropped a small tarp in my living room and use this inside while weather outside is freezing. My wood burns much better thanks to this splitter. **Hard to burn a full round log. Prior to getting this Sun Joe I would use a hatchet and sledge hammer to split wood. This machine is effortless to use (even my petite Japanese wife can split wood). Great value for the dollar.
Worked wonders for hurricane cleanup. Obviously, not as fast as a gas splitter, but much more economical. Easily split 12 inch wide logs
Rolled right out of the box and began splitting right away......worked as advertised. Perfect for those who need a simple, inexpensive splitter for occasional use! Gonna be a great summer around the campfires!
It's faster than my chain saw and easy to use. This was a good investment.
this thing is an animal! I split a 16" log and got 8 pieces out of it. the only things i would change are, a step plate behind the hydraulic end, wider legs for less wobble and a wider cradle. other than that, perfect!
The splitter works as advertised. I have split different size logs with no problem. My problem is with the quality of manufacture. When I received the splitter it had a piece of rubber along the bottom to allow it to be placed on concrete and not slide around. The strip on mine was installed so crooked that it over hanged the base. It did not stop the operation of the splitter but was extremely unsightly so I ripped it off. Now I have to put a mat under the splitter.
From all the YouTube demos and reviews this looked to be a great tool, especially as an older person. The hydraulic action is two speed - left handle (or both) for fastest travel of hydraulic piston and the right handle for small steps in applying the 10 tons of pressure to split a log (up to 12" or better in practice). It all worked perfectly for three days and then the seal gave way. Looks like a bad design for the angular loads on the hydraulic piston pushing against uneven surfaces of wood. A further review of YouTube experiences revealed that others have had the same problem. The seal gives way too soon. Only apparent fix appears to be to place a hard wood block or a flat surfaced stone between the log and the hydraulic piston in order to reduce side loads on the piston. Other than the seal problem this is a must have tool for the real fireplace enthusiast.
Only used it when we had logs too large for our wood burner, maybe 20-30 logs a year. Tonight, tried to split a log and the ram head broke off from the steel rod. Not sure if there's any way to fix it.
