You will have perfect results every time. I "put foods by" utilizing different procedures. This is by far the easiest and more creative of all the methods of food preservation.
i've never done any dehydrating, and wanted to try kale chips, which seems to be all the rage. i ordered the snackmaster site to store, and it came in good time, and was in excellent condition. i brought it home and used it right away. i've made apple chips with great success... sliced the apples, dipped them in lemon juice water, and then put them on the setting the machine recommended. they were easy to check on, just lifting the tray, to test a slice. they even gave tips on how to tell everything's done. have done kale chips about 3 times, and LOVE them. so easy, just a few hours, and they're awesome. you can fit 2 bunches de-stemmed into the trays. it's easy to clean, isn't loud, sounds like a little fan, and isn't heavy. it's exactly what i had hoped for.
I had a very old dehydrator and only used it a couple of times. It took 3-4 days to do, what this dehydrator did in just a few short hours. I love it!!!! Now I am dehydrating everything, from fruits to veggies. I know exactly what is in my soups and snacks, because I did it myself. I am really looking forward to using this with my garden this year along with canning.
Was looking for an inexpensive Food Dehydrator for an idea I had - didn't want to buy an Excaliber if the idea didn't pan out - this Dehydrator worked great - fan is on top for even heat distribution no rotating the shelves is needed, pretty quiet and best of all - it did the job! As soon as you plug it in - it starts up - no built in timer so I bought a wall timer for $5 - set the time, plugged the unit in then into the outlet - worked like a charm. I would definitely recommend this unit and the price can't be beat especially for a product that works beyond it's price point.
So far I have done Jerky, Apples, Tomatoes and jalipanos and all came out EXCELENT! The tomatoes and peppers look way better than I have ever seen- beautiful
The biggest draw for me was the ability to expand. To pay this price and be able to add on later was what got me to think about this purchase, reading the great reviews is what got me to make the purchase. It's quiet and since we took it out of the box a few days ago, it's been running non stop and we haven't even tried to make jerky yet. My biggest reason for even searching dehydrators was because of our dog. She has food allergies that didn't develop until she was about 8 months old. Prior to the discovery, she loved rawhide chews. That had to stop and she was limited of what kind of treats she could have. The pup that was used to a variety of treats was now down to only hypo-allergenic treats from the vet until we discovered sweet potato chews at PetSmart, which she loved and didn't have a reaction to - the only ingredient listed on the package was "sweet potatoes". Paying $8.50 per lb just wasn't a smart option for me...I looked into doing it myself at home so thankfully, we only paid that retail price once! I ordered this machine on a Saturday and was making my own batches of sweet potato chews 4 days later. For what I paid for the machine, I could have purchased less than 6 lbs at retail price. Instead, I've spent less than $10 on sweet potatoes and ended up with 10 lbs of chews. I think we made a smart investment...and so does our dog. :-) IF I had to say anything remotely negative about this machine is that it puts off a good bit of heat so I make sure to have nothing else around it while in use to avoid possible melting. Otherwise...awesome!!!
This unit works great for the price. I only comes with 4 trays, so you are limited as to how much you can make. It also puts out quite a bit of heat, but it's better that running the oven all day. Fruit roll-up tray is great, but it takes 8 hrs to make 1 sheet, which doesn't go very far in my house. Also, if you cut your fruit sliced too thin, they come out dried paper thin and tend to stick to the trays.
I bought this to make kale chips, also tried beef jerky. On the plus side, I like the design, the dehydrator is very simple and easy to clean, air seems to circulate well. I also thought the kale chips started in dehydrator had a more pleasant, less bitter flavor than those that were only baked in the oven. But on the down side, the actual drying time required was much longer than that specified in my recipes (I think this FD-60 model is 500 watts, while the newer ones are 1000 watts). I ended up finishing off both the kale chips and the jerky in the oven, when after too many hours they still weren't dry. This model could be a good value, depending on what you're going to use it for, though it didn't work out for me.
For those who know what to do with one of these already, I imagine it's a pretty good deal. We bought one for the first time and found this product easy to assemble but no instructions were included! So we're trying to guess or look on the net for leads on how long it takes to dehydrate this or that. It's not too loud so that's a plus, but and this is a big but, you may want to buy extra trays at the same time as it can stack up to ten and you'll need every one of them.
The trays dont sit on the base . Can you send me another base this one warped . I didn't get a manual no directions I will change from 1 star to 5 stars if you make this right . I need a new base and directions!
