Works Great. Highly Recommended!

I needed to dethatch my Zoysia lawn, as the thatch was causing problems with disease and limiting growth. I researched both the Greenworks and Sun Joe dethatchers, and the Sun Joe received better reviews, so I decided to go with it. I'm glad I did! The Sun Joe pulled out massive amounts of thatch from my lawn. An 1,100 square feet area filled a 96 gallon trash can to the top, with me compacting the thatch as much as I could! I had my doubts at first, because the unit only weighs about 14lbs, but it did exactly what it was supposed to do. The instructions were intuitive and set up took about 10 minutes. Very easy to operate! This unit also has a scarifying function that I plan to use when I overseed my back yard. The Greenworks unit DOES NOT have that option. Highly Recommended!

I love this dethatcher!

I am so happy I bought this. This has literally been sitting in my cart for about a year and I finally bit the bullet and I am not disappointed! Dethatching is hard work and this makes it so painless and easy! I put it together and ran it through my front yard this morning and I got almost 3 33 gallon bags FULL of thatch! The collection bag is pretty small so it needs to be emptied pretty often but it is easy to do so not a big deal. I’d rather have a small collection bag to pick it all up as I go than not have one at all. I definitely recommend this product!

This thing is awesome! I had issues with my lawnmower this season, it wouldnt mulch the grass. I had long blades of grass that smothered the lawn to were it would grown in thick like years past. I filled up 15 brown paper lawn bags full of dead grass. Best $150 spent (it was on sale). If you have to pay full price its still worth every penny. The time youll save trying to rake it up.

Great value, better than manual work or renting

Easy to use. Very powerful. Better alternative to renting a machine if you plan to use more than once. Great value. Picture shows the thatch removed from my front lawn in one pass.

Awesome product for the best price!

I made 3 different passes with the Sunjoe starting at 10, then 5 and finally 0 while using a 16ga 50ft Hyper Tough extension cord (the wrong gauge) and never had a problem gathering an enormous pile of thatch and exposing multiple thin and dead spots in our front lawn, now to do the rear with the proper 14ga 100ft Hyper Tough extension cord!

I bought this thing thinking that it Hass to be better than a dethatching rake and boy, was I right!! For a little electric guy? This thing absolutely killed it! I could not believe how strong it was. The only downside is having to look around a really long extension cord, but I knew that going into it.

Works well detatching your lawn.

Worked very well and had plenty of power to dethatch my lawn. Very easy to raise or lower height of the machine and I did not bother trying to use the bagger. I would have given it 5 stars but after a few passes and it really started to get annoying having to push the button down on the handle then to squeeze the handle for it to start instead of just easily squeezing the handle and going.. I did not care for that at all! I would possibly also liked to have gotten the battery operated version instead, but I cant see spending more $ for just using this machine 2 a year.

Thatching made simple

For the price, this light weight thatcher was wonderful! My yard was thick with thatch (not done for years) and though it took me four passes just for the thatch/moss alone, it did a great job! If I had thatched with a rake I would have been hurtin' for certain! It takes some calculating to work around the electrical cord, but easily tolerated for the work that was accomplished. Set up was simple, changing blades simple, all of the cover is plastic. One of the holes did not line up as it should when attaching the handle, but it was close enough to secure it. I agree the tiny catcher bag is of no use. I mowed after thatching to pick up the debris. It arrived two days early which was nice. I've only had it two weeks, but it was worth the purchase. My neighbor wants to borrow it next!

Great machine that could use some tweaks

Every year I dethatch my yard to help keep the soil open and ready for water and fertilizer. I was tired of spending $60-$80 a pop to rent a machine for 4 hours. I have a really small yard so I'm typically done in an hour. saw some reviews for this and thought I would give it a whirl. First Impressions. Super simple to put together, packaged nicely for shipping had no damaged items. Super lightweight, so it's easy to transport if needed. Plugged her in attached the Dethatching tines and off I went, this Thing kicks right in and picks up thatch really well. It's not as effective as a pro-grade so it requires maybe another round but for the savings, this will save in the long run it's clearly worth it. The bagger is pretty much worthless, take 5-10 steps and it's already full. Instead, I used twine to hold the cover up and just mowed the lawn after each session, worked like a charm. Starting it could be simpler by putting the safety button on the opposite side of the throttle but it's not a huge drawback more of a slight inconvenience. This is electric and requires a cord to operate which gets in the way fairly easily. I just had my son follow me and maneuver the cord out of the way as needed. another tweak would be to make the handles foldable so it takes up less room while storage. The Scarifier is a nice addition to this machine it really helps scrape up the ground and cutting a path that does things. It allows the grass to grow out instead of up, gives some aeration and makes it easier to seed and fertilize. You do however need to make sure the cover is down when using this as it will shoot out rocks and doesn't feel good when it hits your shin. Pros: easy to use Saves money by not renting 2 great features dethatching and scarifying Cons: Cords get in the way Bagger is useless Handles should fold for more compactness for storage 2 buttons to run machine could have been designed better

Great for lawns and pretty amazing for it's size.

Very impressed with how much dead grass this little machine was able to pull up. Raking by hand would never yield the same results that the AJ801E produced. In the picture you can see how green the lawn is and just how much dead grass was still lying down below. It's much easier on the lawn than a gas powered rental machine would be, so using this every year isn't a concern. The ON/OFF switch lever is pretty wobbly (one reason I can't give it 5 stars) but if you're easy with it you'll be fine. For the low price, you know cheaper plastic parts are going to be used here and there. But where it counts, the performance, it's a tremendous value. Everyone who's seen it in action still can't believe something this small can do this good of a job. The noise level is no louder than a vacuum cleaner, so you won't be bothering the neighbors. The cord can be a slight bother, but if you simply pay attention or have someone keep it out of your way, it's a breeze. I'm playing it on the safe side and choosing not to run the unit non-stop. This unit isn't meant for commercial properties, but if you let it rest (cool off) after doing a good sized chunk and clean up that area before moving on to the next area you'll be fine. I did about 7000 sq ft the first day (let it rest 3-4 times) and 5000 sq ft at another property the next day (let it rest 3-4 times) without a single problem. Leaf blowing the dead grass into piles was so much faster than raking it up by hand. Once you've finished picking up the piles you can also go over it with a lawn mower to vacuum up any last traces if you really want to be as thorough as possible. If not, you'll get it the next time you mow the lawn. The collection bag it comes with is completely useless, it's so small you wouldn't get more than 20 feet and it would need to be emptied (another reason it doesn't earn 5 stars).
