Thankfully I'm an IT guy because "My Cloud Home" is not easy to setup and install. You see the term "Home" and think it will be easy-as-pie for anyone. It isn't. They don't make it clear that there a new separate Discovery app for My Cloud Home. And forget trying to install the promised Acronis backup software -- it is not compatible (you have to figure that out on your own). Acronis is the single biggest reason I bought a WD NAS unit. Not having Acronis work, and not spelling that out before purchase, is a HUGE disappointment. WD has always been our gold-standard, sadly not now.
The Apple app is not as good as the previous one. It was much better and easier to use than it is now. Also the WD TV doesn't work with the my cloud home drives.
New unit is good, but doesn't save stuff in pdf format, making printing a chore. Had to buy the new unit because my old unit was compromised through WD's network somehow. Dealing with WD has been an absolute NIGTHMARE! It's been well over 2 months and I'm no closer to getting my data recovered than when they first told me to unplug my unit. Their service is abominable!!
Not a big fan. Dragging and dropping multiple large files or directories locks it up. There were other reviews about the internet connection requirement and I think I should have listened to those reviews more.
This unit does not operate like a regular NAS. The Mac app interface is rather simplistic, yet a bit confusing. There should be a more robust web interface with settings beyond consumer use. Copying to the unit via the web interface is very limited. Copying to the unit via the Mac app is also limited in amount of files.
Just okay, unfortunately this didn't meet my expectations. I anticipated being able to directly save to this NAS but I'm only able to save to it via their cloud app that I have to log into. From my home Wireless LAN, I should be able to point devices to this to save without having to go through a manger web app interface. I have wired surveillance cameras that I need a backup plan to save video onto a NAS but cannot do it with this drive. Connecting from a phone or laptop is no problem although, for some reason, Mac's TimeMachine doesn't recognize the NAS unless I manually login each time - sort of defeats the purpose. For my purposes, this is an ineffective NAS drive. If you are only going to save files from laptops and phones, I guess its okay but I wouldn't count on it. I think I'm going to just use it connected directly to my laptop via USB, again, defeating the purpose but its better than the way the solution was designed.
Really displeased with the interface to this device. The device cannot be treated as a network drive, you must use the internet connection. Only useful to shuck and use the drive.
The My Cloud Home device is extremely easy to set up and use. As long as you understand the limitations of the device, it is a great solution to being able to share documents, pictures, etc. among multiple devices even when you are not home. The My Cloud Home is not a NAS device and it requires and active internet for accessing the device, even when you are at home. Using your local network will not work! Additionally, since the device is not a NAS, your backup solution may not be able to back up files to or from this device. Personally, for me, these limitations are a deal breaker and I would not recommend to others.
Crap Android download experience! I'd give it 0 out of 5 stars if that were possible. The original My Cloud (OS 3?) app was better than the current My Cloud Home app. When you go to "Save to mobile device", the only progress info for the download is an occasional pop up, and nothing tells you where the file was saved (or even allows the option to tell the app where to download the file). I downloaded some mp4 files and finally found that the app saved them under the Internal Storage/Pictures folder on the Android tablet, had changed the filename to something completely nonsensical, and added a jpg extension to the filename rendering it no longer a movie file. Your My Cloud Home app (Android) needs a serious overhaul!
This new version of the WD cloud product has far less functionality that prior versions. You can only have a small folder on your desktop where before you could share the device on your network. I've actually powered this device off and am using older versions of the product until they die.
