This kettle smoker is large enough for the home cook. Does a good job of smoking ribs and going to do salmon next as I'm sure it will do an excellent job.
This thing is SO easy to use and results are excellent BUT ... You REALLY DO NEED a kitchen fan that exhausts to the OUTSIDE. Only shortfall is that it is initially difficult to find the small chips (border line sawdust size) that it requires but a web search or email to Nordic Ware will turn those up real quick.
I wouldn't hesitate recommending this product as long as the user is willing to learn and be patient when it comes to achieving the desired results. I've used it to smoke just about anything that will fit into its domed lid and have been very satisfied with the results. The first thing that a potential buyer need to understand it that this smoker is designed to handle family sized quantity of food and it will save money if it is used on food items like salmon and ham. I don't recommend using it indoors, it will just create an odor problem unless the exhaust fan is turned on full blast. I use it exclusively in the patio on a two burner Coleman camper stove that takes the 1 lb propane tanks and it works great. After a few months I've decided to buy a second smoker to speed up the process. Also, please read up about brining because you will have to learn to prepare the meat before you even try to smoke it. Don't be afraid, try a small amount at a time and be patient because it is both rewarding and fun once you get the hang of it.
I found this item NEW at a Goodwill store for $8. Prior, I used the brinkman smoke-n-grill smoker but I live in an apartment. Whenever I wanted to smoke meats I had to take my grill to the designated BBQ area and assemble it...use it...let it cool...dissassemble it...and put it back into the closet on my back porch. This little stove-top was an excellent find. I have been smoking meats on it every weekend for the last 3 months. I've been using regular hickory wood chips and it works just fine. Just soak the chips for about an hour...wait for some of the chips to sink(waterlogged).. I've smoked pork ribs, country style ribs, whole chicken and plan to do salmon when the salmon run comes in October. The taste is excellent and I've been smoking meat for the last 10yrs. This has been such a great find and now I can smoke all year long.
This does a great job at producing smoke, had to keep stopping and turning down stove to keep from overcooking food and smoking up kitchen, and setting off smoke alarm. This would be good to use on the gas grill.
This turned out to be a pretty good purchase. Tried this out by 'smoking' a boneless turkey breast (about 3 lbs). The smoke flavor wasn't as intense as I like, but I didn't use the full recommended amount. It took about 1.5 hrs to cook (about 30 minutes to get up to full temp). I lined the drip pan with foil which made the cleanup very easy. No doubt using this unit used less energy than using the oven and I like that the temperature gauge is so visible. Walmart had the best price of the stores that I checked before I made the purchase.
Nothing compares to smoking foods outdoors. However, when weather doesn't permit the Nordic Kettle Smoker is a great substitute. I've used this once so far and I am very pleased.
I bought this for my brother for his apartment since he can't grill, but it requires outside ventilation. the apartment exhaust fan is linked to all the other apartments and his kitchen is not next to a window so it didn't work for him. could not review anymore as we returned it. return process was very simple.
Made 1/2 pork loin and chicken thighs, they came out excellent! boneless, skinless breasts were on the dry side, maybe cuz of all the white meat? the problem is the taste. there was no way i could of put more wood in it, and vent was nearly closed. used real chips from hardware store, not the dust that was included. JUST DID NOT have the smoke taste that i was looking for! while i'm new at this, i'm thinking i should of got an electric or gas charcoal smoker. this is why i cannot recommend.
I was very excited about the Kettle Smoker until I tried it out. I used the recommended amount of wood chips, but I experienced hardly any true smoke flavor. Maybe if I increase the chips or purchase Oak flavored chips instead. Not the quick fix for smokey craving. But will use to cook regular meats and fish fillets. :(
