My house is 3500 sq ft and this router covers the house easily. Great speeds on all floors. I did have to call tech support though because the Bluetooth setup did not work. Had to setup the routers manually.
The coverage is great. It was up and running in 10 minutes and was very easy. I now am getting 125 MB download speed in the same room I use to get 4 MB download using a extender. Great features
I just moved into a ranch style one story. I decided to upgrade everything related to wifi coverage and speed. I initially bought a TP-Link archer c7 wifi router which had great reviews and a Netgear CM700 cable modem. The cable modem and TP-Link were getting speeds as promised when close to the router, but I had corners of the house that were getting less than 5MBs (From 100+MBs nearby). I even had one corner where my sons PC sits that often was not even getting the signal. That was not going to work for me. I returned the TP-Link and order the google wifi system on a bigly online retailer (the biggest). I waited a week or two and still nothing in stock. Was surprised to see Wal-Mart had it. Ordered online and had it 2 days later. Google wifi works great in our house. Lowest speeds I get are around 50MBs even in my sons room. Incredibly easy to set up. While I think the google wifi routers look nice throughout the house, my wife does not agree and I have them all hiding. I wanted the TP-Link to work since it is much less expensive than this system, but I wasn't going to accept inferior speed to save $200.
This product is an excellant way to improve your home WiFi performance and is very quick and easy to install. The total install and setup only takes about 30 minutes. I installed the 3 router system distributed in a single level 2200 sq. ft. home that previously had some dead spots and lower signal level. I now have a strong signal in every area of the house and out into the garage, detached shop and yard areas. On a Comcast internet connection, I typically get a consistant 25 - 27 mb download speed and 5-6 mb upload speed. During a recent family event we had 20 devices attached with no signal loss or speed problems at all. This product is highly recommended.
Having a bit of (outdated) IT experience, I purchased this expecting to have to do a fair amount of wrestling to get it connected to my Comcast modem/router. I found that if you know how to install an app on your cell phone and how to read very basic instructions, it is truly plug and play. There were no "network configuration" settings to mess with. The only wrinkle was they don't mention that you need to make sure your cell phone bluetooth is turned on for the setup app to work. Once the setup is completed you can turn it off again if you want. The result is high speed WiFi throughout a 2,500 square foot home with the Comcast router at one end of the house and the streaming video TV at the far end. As a side note, after installing the system, I had to temporarily relocate my desk-top PC (without wireless) to another room. I just plugged it into one of the remote Google units and it fired up with no questions asked. Refreshing.
This system was very easy to set up.. and for once in my house I actually have a very strong wifi signal all over my house. I was lucky to get a signal much less any speed in my upstairs.. now, no issues and download measured at 97 Mbps at furthest point away
This is an amazing product and I would highly recommend anyone with WiFi connectivity issues to get it. I was contemplating punching holes in my drywall and running Ethernet wires all over my home, but this product saved me time, effort and money. Super easy to install and works like a breeze, and now I have internet all over my home. Thanks Google for making a great product!
I am covering a 5200 square foot home. I have the nodes Ethernet cabled for the back haul and each node gets full speed. If I don't have the Ethernet cord I get about 50% reduction in speed due to the size of the home. I was debating this over the Orbi and I picked this because I have a large home and may need to add more modes and the price per mode is a lot cheaper. (I have 3 floors so 1 on each floor, whereas the orbi there is only 2). Also Orbi does not have an Ethernet back haul and I have Ethernet run throughout my house and wanted to take advantage of it. So Google wifi fit my needs more and so far and I am glad with my purchase. I will update if anything changes. Pro: Very easy to set up 5ghz and 2.5ghz band share same SSID True mesh system Fast with Ethernet backhaul Fashionable and tiny (I have white echos so they match) Fast routers Easy app to manage devices Con: Not enough parental controls No advanced configuration Speed loss with nodes if not wired together Not enough ports on each node, had to buy switches No tri-band like competition Even with the Cons I still rate 4 stars as they were not deal breakers for me and I still really liked it. If Google updated the app for more parental controls and advanced config I would give it 5 stars. Recommend
TLDR: Great product, may not work like you expect I was under pressure to get a mesh network in place at our small business (because boss read about it in business journal and wanted to know why we didn't have it already). On watch lists all over for this item to become available, but every time I received notification, was sold out. The hardware itself is extremely well made and wireless performance is on par with our best single access point routers. Put this in place in mesh mode thinking that it would work as an all-encompassing wireless network. Access speeds extremely fast, coverage great! Went home, and the next morning my entire network was in an uproar. This product is designed to REPLACE your networking equipment. As such, it hijacked DHCP and put everyone on a different network than our wired network. Everyone could access the internet quite quickly, but nothing inside on our wired network! Corrected this by putting this in "Bridged" mode. Doing so, however, makes them function like single access points - no mesh! I was able to get mesh-like by using the same SSID, this this is a really bad work-around and there is no reason you couldn't do both. Google reps have acknowledged this and indicate that maybe it will be fixed in a future software update. This is definitely a consumer item, and I think Google should have made this much clearer! Please note this affects not only small businesses, but also consumers who can't remove their existing equipment from their networks (such as combined TV/Internet services requiring set-top boxes). Due diligence is necessary to make sure this product will work with your setup.
If a single Wifi router doesn't provide coverage for you location, this is a simple solution with a very limited set of features. Experienced users will not like the limitations. First time users will probably like the easy setup and configuration. 1. No Windows app to manage it. If you want that level of management, you have to run your Google Wifi app in an emulator such an Remix. 2. Limited security options might create issues for older devices. 3. No WPS setup. 4. Only 2 Ethernet connections on each node. One will be used on your master node to connect to the modem. 5. The worst is no contol over your local IP address. Google locks it at 192.168.86.X for your network. Not typical. I had a number of devices with fixed IP addresses set to the standard 192.168.0.X.
