I love this lens! But you really have to focus to escape blur, and it cannot be windy!
Not bad for infant portraits, and a really excellent macro lens if you can get close to the subject. With the high ISO capabilities of modern SLRs, a very large maximum aperture is not as important as it used to be.
This lens is a winner...much, much more than I bargained for. If you love macro and also the ability to shoot with a 40 mm lens...YOU WILL LOVE this lens. Outstanding for Nikon...and an excellent price. Shoot like the pros with this small wonder. You will be amazed at the results. If you are thinking 35 or 40 mm...go with this lens...you will not be disappointed.
Pros: At just above the normal lens range, this lens is still suitable for small group photos and is compact enough for carrying for the occasional macro close up. Cons:
This is my first purchase of a lense that didn't come with the camera. I absolutely love it. I have so much to learn with this lense. After a few days of practicing I have learned a lot about better focusing and enjoying the tiny details it can pick up.
Pros: Flawless autofocus, Manual focus very easy, Lightweight, Short overall length Cons: Narrow depth of field Other thoughts: The depth of field is a fundamental property of the lens and f-stop. The manufacturer has little control over this, but prospective buyers should not be surprised to see some blurry images. In some circumstances it is necessary to use manual focus because the autofocus may select the wrong plane. Also, this is not a zoom lens; the camera must be moved to adjust image size.
Pros: Small Lightweight Easy to use Takes great macro pix Very reasonable cost Excellent use of available light outdoors Cons: None so far Other thoughts: This lens simply takes great macro photos; I can't believe it was made for the pro-sumer market! We experimented with supplementary lighting and found that the best pix were invariably captured with available light. Great. I highly recommend it.
I LOVE this lens, good focus control, nice handling, SHARP SHARPE SHARPE, sweet resolution, crisp details, THE COLORS are WOW OMG; I will make few films with this on my D7100. stills too, of course.
Pros: I am just getting to know this lens, and find that it occupies a useful space between the 35mm and the 50mm primes, albeit with less low-light capability. The 40mm is a good lens for portraits and a good, general walking-around lens. It's not my favorite prime right now (that would be the 'nifty 50'), but a good one to have in your bag, with the usual superior Nikon quality Lightweight and easy to carry. I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. Beach Camera's specials (bonus filter pack this time) are great. Cons: Lack of low-light capability. Sometimes 'hunts' to focus. Other thoughts: 40mm is a nice 'in-between' focal length, neither too telephoto nor too wide.
A good but not a great lens. good for the price. feels cheap compared to my other nikkor lens. auto focus seams ok but a little hard to manual focus. Doesn't feel as smooth as my other lenses. But for the price....
