If you are looking to create a natural looking island for your pond and pond critters this is great. If you want a manicured look (like an earlier reviewer who was concerned about keeping the grass trimmed) this product might not be for you. My primary goal was to create a natural looking island with uncut grass and natural vegetation to provide cover and habitat for waterfowl and amphibians and it works great for that. The frogs love it!. I also liked that it is made in the US from recycled products. I'm thinking of getting another one and attaching it to the one I already have.
This product is not as good as you would think it should be or could be! There is a problem with the color choice of the main part of the floating mat and the foam floating inserts that the company could have selected better materials to make it out of. Island color is Gray when Green would have been far better. They suggest planting grass to cover all parts of the mat, but who wants to have to trim grass on a pond island! The foam they use will have to be protected from sunlight because it will deteriorate since it is not U.V.A. or U.V.B. sun ray protected, It's cheap foam! They do not provide enough plating media in the kit to properly plant your vegetation as they state in the directions. If you plant perennials in it and want to sink it under your ice line in the winter, you won't be able to do that. You will have to some how pull your plants out that have developed an inter twined growth around the mat fibers, which means you will cause damage to them and you will still have to re-pot them to lower in your pond. So, in the north area's of the country you have the plant/ice issue and in the southern parts you will have the sun issue with deterioration if not protected. There is about $25.00 worth of materials here, so the Islandscape is very over priced for what it is, what it does and how well it should last. A good concept but constructed out of poorly chosen materials and a poorly thought out construction method and they failed to address issues of northern and southern users. I had let the company know this and they would not answer all my questions at this time.
