This machine is very basic. I use it to hem pant legs and sew on buttons and zippers. I am not experienced in sewing, but I have figured out how to make functionable cloths. This machine was what I hoped it would be. recommend it to anyone who is inexperienced and needs an easy-to-use machine.
I love this machine and I am so happy I bought it. The money was right for it. I use it every day for apparel, home decor, quilts, purses, and mending projects. If you have difficulty with this machine read the manual, the only issues I have ever had were due to my own errors with bobbin and thread tension or improper threading.
i have had other machines..but always come back to brother...when my other brother finally conked out,i bought a singer at a very good price...didnt work good..took it back and got this one...easy to setup and operate...and i already had a lot of feet that work with this one...i love this machine...will always buy brother products
If you are in the store than the box is descriptive of what you get, but the online page is not helpful. I bought online and am including info here I wanted to know before buying. The 14 stitches, in number order on the dial are: 1. Buttonhole 2, 3, & 4 are zig-zag stitches of increasing width 5. Zig-zag (Satin) Stitch 6 thru 10 are straight stitches of increasing length, center needle position. 11 straight stitch, left needle position. 12. straight blind stitch. 13. shell pintuck stitch 14. 4elastic stitch. What comes with the machine is three plastic bobbins, 3 extra needles, a mending plate, buttonholer foot, button foot, zipper foot, foot switch, 48 pages of illustrated instructions in English and again in Spanish (separate sections avoiding the confusion of previous manuals). There is included a DVD of instructions. The manual is clearly written and illustrated with line drawings. I didn't rate the durability and meets expectations, since I haven't had it long enough to rate durability and the expectations were zero based on lack of information of what is in the box. The other points got 5 stars because it is a great value (I paid $59 online), it has great features for the money, it has simplicity in design appearance and looks nicely arranged. For the price I wouldn't expect more. Like all low-priced machines a certain number of them will have problems needing corrections, but I haven't experienced that yet.
I am a begining seamstress, but I needed a machine for at home so I researched a bunch of machines before finally purchasing one. I didn't need a lot of bells and whistles and I didn't want to spend alot of money. This machine matched my specs and it has totally been worth it. It is super easy to use, and comes with an instructional DVD incase you don't already know how to use one. I have owned my machine for over a month now and use it almost daily and have yet to run into any problems with it. I would reccomend this machine to ANYONE :)
Three years ago I got this machine for my birthday gift from my husband. I used it to hem pants and do basic repairs. This past May, he bought me a machine quilting class for mother's day. Purchased the extra feet we need and I took the class. I did make the teacher aware that the quilt was going to be queen size and not just the lap quilt. I pieced the material for the blocks and sewed all the borders and made the quilt sandwich as well as quilting it. Next week will be the border application class to finish it off. The machine worked beautifully. I have had no problems at all.
I was very excited to use this machine in sewing classes I teach to young girls. It is an excellent value for what I needed it for-- basic, yet gets the job done well. One major issue with this machine for young girls-- there is very little control in starting the machine. It just takes off with little foot pressure. Had to return it for another Brother model.
I have 20 years of sewing experience. I have never used a worse sewing machine in all my years of sewing than this useless junk. No matter how much I tinker with the tension this machine can not manage a simple straight stitch. It has one job and it can't even manage that. Skip this machine and go for the Brother SE400.
I purchased the Brothers Sewing Machine for my daughter. What a disappointment! 1. The instructions were vague and confusing. 2. When we went to put the bobbin in parts started falling off the machine. We put all the parts back. 3. She started to sew and the foot fell off as she was sewing. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
I have been sewing for over 50 yrs. This machine is the worst I have ever purchased. It is noisy. For a machine that is suggested for beginners it is an abomination ! If one doesn't know how to do some basic repairs or fixes it could possibly be a major detriment to a sewing future. I will NEVER buy another Brother product. I will purchase next another Kenmore or a Singer, but never again a Brother.
