I purchased this thermostat after having tried a Honeywell 5/2 programmable, and a 3m filtrate 7 day programmable - the latter I used for over a year - marginally satisfied with the 3m, the Honeywell was cumbersome and horrible. I had read reviews on this thermostat on another website, and found it to be lauded for ease of installation, programming and routine use. I found this on clearance for a good price, and installed it easily within ten minutes, I couldn't be happier with its performance and value. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
I've used Hunter thermostats over the last couple of decades. I obtained the 1-pack--Walmart is closing these out. The key points: 1. Before attempting to configure wiring, shut down the power to your HVAC systems (furnace, heat pump, blower, etc.)--flip the applicable circuit breakers off. 2. Get the wiring correct: Unlike the electrical code, strict standards don't exist for HVAC wiring--brands and even models differ.. Don't merely match colors (i.e., colors of the wires from the wall to colors of the terminals in the 44134). You may need to do some searching and parsing online to become more certain. The instruction sheet generally proves adequate for most people. The vast majority of DIY'ers succeed with thermostat replacement. 3. If your system HVAC uses a "Comm" wire, simply deaden that wire with electrical tape or a small wirenut secured well with electrical tape. The 44134 (and, some other Hunter models) can't use that wire. Hunter warns in FAQs: Carelessly connecting the Comm wire anyway to another port harms the unit and perhaps your HVAC. (The Comm wire passes relatively high voltage and current.) 4. Batteries aren't included: The 44134 won't work without 2 good AA (alkaline) batteries--they must be installed correctly as to polarity. 5. Make certain that the switch on the lower left side is set correctly to "Cool," "Off," or "Heat" : it's really easy to forget that switch. The Hunter won't automatically switch from cooling to heating (or, heating to cooling). 6. The manual online is identical to that received with the unit--Hunter never upgrades those. The installation instruction sheets (in differing languages) aren't available online, though. The manual applies only after correct installation. Keep the manual and installation instruction sheets in a safe, accessible, and memorable place. 7. FAQs from Hunter's website unfortunately are sparse--they may at times prove useful and key, though. 8. I used Hunter phone support a few years ago--a woman answered my question very well. Phone support appears to prove available only during standard business hours, though. The representative may be able to help with wiring issues. Personal web support proved then difficult: That may have changed. 9. With my current Goodman heat pump system, I can't get the fan switch (bottom-right) to work as "always on" ("On"): I find this true also with Hunter's 44277 model, as well. 10. Configuration of scheduling, etc. isn't "intuitive":Apparently, Honeywell often is preferred for ease of configuration. With Hunter, the manual thus proves quite key:Therefore, configuration of the 44134 proves far from impossible. (More capabilities often equate to more complexity.) Scheduling and fancy features prove of less value to retirees, the disabled, and shut-ins. 11. Hunter is a considerably more economical purchase than Honeywell and many other makes. it's proven quite workable over the years. I've never seen a Hunter "fail" outright. I added one star for value--subtracted one for my fan issue. The price currently is insane. This is way better than an analog dial solution and most simpleton HVAC default (OEM) and cheaper aftermarket "digital" thermostats. My old thermostat here had become quite dingy over the years, as well--the Hunter proves far more attractive. (This bumps up the value of a property, too--a tiny bit--perhaps merely subliminally. More importantly, changeover to a programmable thermostat proves "done already"--to Realtors and others interested in a property. This always proves one of the first things I do after I move....)
If you buy one of these be sure to also buy a flashlight, there is no backlight in it and I had to use a flashlight to read it in daytime or nightime, replaced it after 4 days with identical Hunter that has a very nice light.
Nothing but a pain, should have stuck the the brand that proved quality over the years (honeywell)
