This product looks like it came right from the combine. We do not find that much chaff in with the sun flower seeds. For 40 years we have been buying black oil sunflower seeds direct from the farmers. This is the second bag of Morning Song and it compares favorably with that from the farms. If you need pure/cleaned sun flower seed you may have to pay extra and the birds won't care either way. Our thinking is that if pure seed is needed, you feeder has too small an opening for your birds. Our feathered friends are going through 50 pounds in less than a month.
I purchased a 50# bag and at least 5% was waste material. Looked like it was never cleaned after harvest.
My 40 lb. bag has so much debris in it that I have to manually sort it a pound at a time. The main form of unwanted debris is sticks, mostly 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches in length and the 2nd ingredient that will clog Your feeders is Peanut shell fragments and there are other items that I can't identify. I tried different methods to try and strain it through wire mesh or hardware cloth but the seeds oblong shape negates that possibility. I guess if there was a good way to separate the debris, Scotts would have already done it. I regret not searching for the comments, that are so easy to find here on Scotts site, because I would have saved Myself a LOT of trouble if I had.
