GREAT HEADS UP ON FOUL WEATHER

Works like a champ when you are done going through the set up procedures. I keep the warning features muted but keep in mind you will not have any control over this when a real warning arises, which is what you bought it for anyway. We had some violent warnings in the past couple of weeks and the warning feature went off like a charm. It'll freak you out with the sound at first until your brain recognizes what the sound is. The unit then gives the verbal weather advice. Neat unit, leave on its station or take with.

This radio is easy to program, and the fact that it is portable and can be taken with you is even better. Great value for the price.

The best of several weather radios I've tried!

I've tried all sorts of weather alert radios over the years and have learned to hate them with a passion. They /all/ have user design problems I haven't been able to ignore: loud beeping keys that you can't quiet, misspellings on the display ("tornato alert"? really?), AC adapters that disable the batteries so the radio turns off when the power is out, and heart-attack-inducing alarms that sound off at FULL SCREAMING VOLUME - for a thunderstorm watch. Seriously? The people who design these things obviously don't actually take them home and use them for a month or they'd never release a product like that. This one is different. Oh, the menu-based user interface is still a bit of a pain to navigate, and I don't especially like the always-on (when you have it on its powered stand, which is the way you'd generally use it at home) blue display backlight. Other than that, they've generally done things right with this radio. The big difference here is that you can customize what levels will sound off the alarm. Don't need to hear an alert for a simple thunderstorm watch? You can disable it. You'll still see a very noticeable light indicator (there are three of them: advisory, watch, and warning), but you don't have to be woken up to hear that it's going to rain this morning. Required weekly test? Nope; don't want to hear it. My only complaint with the whole process of setting it up is that there are a LOT of classes of alerts you might get, and going through the list takes a while. Wow, I never thought of all the ways I can can die: chemical spills, dust storms, zombie attacks, etc. The batteries you put in it aren't charged, so you'll need to put in a good set of alkalines; better yet, use lithium cells, which won't leak and will last about forever. They'll only be used when you take it off the stand or when the power is out. All-in-all I've been very happy with this. I'm writing this because a co-worker asked me about it today when the one in my office went off because of an evacuation alert due to a chemical spill from a train derailment. This got me to thinking how much I like this one... and as a matter of fact I'm going to go buy another as a replacement for the crummy one I have at my house.

This radio was SUPER EASY to set up. My 7 year old helped me do it. I just bought it today and there are storms in my area tonight. It has a small light that indicates if there's a watch, or warning current... and you can keep it silent if you want, where it will only sound if there's a warning... so you can go to bed and not have to worry if there is a "high wind watch" or anything.... OR if you want it to sound when there is a watch or warning, you can. I have waited for years to get the right weather radio for me... and I've found it!

When we moved to Alabama, where they have pretty volatile weather at times, I bought this radio. It lets us know whenever we have bad weather coming, and is very informative. We especially like the battery backup feature, for when we have to go into our shelter. I have not had any problems with this radio, at all. After the initial set up, there is nothing to do. We have purchased 3 of these radios, all together. We bought one for my husbands mother for Mother's Day, and I recently ordered another one and had it delivered right to my Mother, when she told me, they had a tornado not far from her, and no sirens went off in their town, to warn them!! Both of our Mom's love their's too. What better gift to give to someone, but safety and piece of mind??!!

This little weather alert radio does exactly what I need it to do. It informs me when there are warnings in the area. It can be set for advisories, watches and/or warnings and has a loud notification beep that would wake up even the deepest of sleepers. It's size makes it convenient to move from room to room. The only drawback would be that it uses battery power VERY quickly. A great price for a life-saving, no frills, weather alert radio. I highly recommend it.

This is great weather radio! I bought this after a tornado hit my home this year to keep my family safe when I'm not home. I set it up and showed them how to do the same. Preparation is key, because I'm a fire fighter. I recommend this unit to the public for one reason and thats its ability to take with you to your safe area or lowest part of your home during certain types of emergencies with power outage. I had this model for 6 months now and i'm just now charging the batteries for it to be on the safe side just in case we have to grab & go with it. It recommends to not use rechargable batteries, but i do to save on battery cost. You just have to recharge them outside of the unit. Very good price considered most other units are not mobile for around the same price.

As with all weather radios I've encountered, they all have their pros and cons. Pros: 1# LED lights for Advisory, Watch, and Warning. 2# EOM #end of message#-means it'll turn off automatically after the alert is issued rather than staying on for 5 minutes like other brands. 3# Selectable alerts except for all Warnings. 4# "Silenced" option #silences all alerts except Warnings, but still shows the LED and message# 5) Non-vulnerable memory #your settings will not be lost if the batteries are dead# Cons: 1) Constant white noise. Not a reception issue, it's more of a speaker quality issue that doesn't affect performance at all. Just a little annoying. 2) #refer back to pros 3 and 4# The option to turn off any Warnings is not available. As a result even in the Silenced mode you'll be alerted to Warnings that aren't very important. For example, our area receives flash flood warnings every 15 minutes when a storm rolls through, but is it really necessary to wake me up at 4:00a for every one of these alerts issued by NWS? Therefore, I'd like to turn my radio off completely when this happens and I know the storm has already passed. 3# No OFF button. To silence all alerts like the above, you need to remove the batteries and hope you get nothing important. I suggest having a separate radio that can be entirely silenced if you must remove the batteries, but this radio Will Keep You Safe if this is your only one. 4# No quick option to change the channel or scan for a new one. 5) Unexpired messages will not reappear on the screen/light up after an overriding alert is expired. For example, you receive a Tornado Watch, then receive a Tornado Warning. After the Warning is expired, the Watch will not scroll on the screen and no LED is lit. The only way to know there's a Watch still in effect is to check the history. 6) Radio stand does not charge batteries. Additional notes: Reviews for this product have noted that the batteries die quick, but compared with all other portable weather radios #not desktop# the batteries last just as long as any other. However, I understand the concern if you only use battery power since there is no OFF button. Some have also mentioned they don't like the alert tone. The alert tone is the standard alert tone that most Emergency Activation Systems use. I hope this review addresses all your concerns before purchasing. *This review addresses most concerns in comparison with other weather radios I own or once owned #Oregon Scientific WR602, Oregon Scientific WR601, Midland 74-250C, Midland HH54, Midland WR300, and Eton Zoneguard#.

Bought this weather alert because my other one died. This is my first AccuRite brand. The price and size is what drew me to it originally. It was a bit confusing to program, but once I figured it out, it was a piece of cake. As another commenter said, I didn't know there were so many ways I could be in danger. Civil Emergencies, Biological Hazard, Contagious Diseases, Food Contamination, Industrial Fires, Avalanches, Boil Water Alerts, Coastal Flooding (not much danger of that since I'm in Nebraska), Landslides and even Icebergs....yes, Iceberg warnings is in the list. In all, there are 80, yes, 80, alert categories. I like the option to choose which weather/event watches I want to have the alarm go off about. Can't shut off the warning alerts, but I'm not too worried about volcanoes, hurricanes or avalanches. I'm can't remember if it's in the description, but it is S.A.M.E. progammable. That was very important to me. The text on the screen is nice and large and you can choose how fast the message scrolls. The reception is nice and clear, not much static at all. There are a couple of things I don't like, which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5, the blue backlight of the screen does not shut off when the radio is in the charger base. It was kind of annoying since I have it next to my bed, but I just turned it away from me and problem solved. The other is the volume, there's no way to set the volume level, there is a volume control on the side of the radio, but everytime it went off, I had to adjust it down. Other than those two things I'm satisfied with the radio.
