This is the actual handbook used by the Barefoot Doctors of Ho Pei Province in the People's Republic of China. Responding to the calls of the Cultural Revolution, the local Department of Health prepared it as part of a training course for the para?professional medical workers who go into the farming villages to serve the peasants of China. This "cookbook" for medical practice in the Chinese mode includes all the basics the Chinese practitioners of acupuncture (needle treatment) and moxibustion (similar to acupuncture, but involving the use of heated cones instead of needles) need to know. It lists dozens of common illnesses and tells precisely how to treat them. It illustrates the acupuncture points with clear diagrams. It discusses the theory behind the practices. It even tells what to do in case something goes wrong. The translators do not endorse any of the practices described here; rather, they recognize the need for Westerners to have an authentic version of these newly popular methods. Martin Elliot Silverstein, M.D., F.A.C.S., a general surgeon, has practiced and taught at New York Medical College, Metropolitan Hospital, and the University of Kansas Medical School; he is currently at the University of Arizona Medical Center.
