I have dual neurological disabilities & this make/model was recommended to me to see how weather affects both. This has everything I need or could want & price is great! Easy to read display & love it's a tabletop unit as can move it anywhere in the house if we want. Would highly recommend for anyone interesting in weather as well as anyone with medical issues that are/can be affected by various aspects of weather.
Had the weather station for about 6 mos, really don't need the TV weather guys/gals anymore. Everything you need is right there. Temps, humidity, pressure, forecast, wind speed and history. Even has an alarm to let you know when something hits a high or low. Only a couple of limits on the unit. Wind direction is not given, but with a prevailing wind, don't need it. Also, the lower limit on humidity seems to be 15%. I know the humidity is lower, we live in the desert. And falling pressure in the desert does not mean rain unless humidity is quite high. So, predictions are a little skewed. For the money, this is a great bargain. Tracking with 12 hour history really gives you an idea of how weather changes rapidly. Shows time and date and moon phase too. Fun instrument for kids and adults to learn about local weather.
The AcuRite Weather station is wonderful. I have had one for 2 years, so we decided to give one as a gift to our son and son-in-law. We ordered them on line from WalMart and when we received them one of them had been opened and the box was all beat up. It looked like a store return. To late to get another one sent. I just hope it wasn't returned because of a defect or something. Poor quality control on WalMart's part.
Love this product. This was a replacement and much better than the last one. Once this one bites the dust I want to get the AcuRite Weather station that also includes the rain gauge.
I researched many affordable weather station types and brands. I studied the reviews form here, Amazon, and many others. It seemed the most complaints were from the units that had the most options/functions. Too many cheap parts and too much to go wrong. We decided to get the Acurite 8" Digital Weather Station Forecaster for the functions it did have as well as the ones it did not. This model requires you to set the time and date yourself (too many reviews complained the atomic features on other similar units didn't work right). This model does not have a rain gauge or show wind direction (it does show wind speed). We felt we could easily handle those options ourselves by going old school with a manual rain gauge and weather vane. We knew we'd have to mount the unit's sensors in an area that would not get very much shade, but where it could get a fair amount of wind from all directions. By doing so of course would give us an inaccurate temperature (and heat index) reading when the sun would hit it. That is why we also kept in operation our existing Acurite Wireless Indoor Outdoor Digital Thermometer (also purchased at Walmart) which is mounted in the shade giving us what we feel is pretty accurate outdoor temperature readings (and has been working very well for several months now). We live in Florida, so keeping an eye on weather conditions is important to us. We mainly wanted this unit to track Barometric Pressure, Wind Speed, Dew Point, Humidity, Heat Index, and the Moon Phase is pretty cool too. It keeps track of the high and low averages of the before mentioned functions (including temperature and wind speed), offers a forecast--which surely can't be worse than at least one of our local weathermen, and more. (Seriously, I wouldn't bet the farm on the future forecast, as it pretty much changes if the Barometric Pressure changes, but it's still kinda fun to watch it change icons). The display screen is arranged nicely and large enough for me to see clearly, and I'm blind as a bat! There is no back light for viewing in the dark, so keep that in mind when deciding where to place the display screen. The instructions are clear and set up is not hard at all. Our unit was up and functioning in no time. I ordered it online (figured the price would be better) and chose Free Ship to Store (I live real close to our nearest Walmart). I had an email an hour after I ordered it saying it was ready for pick up, saving me from schlepping through the whole store. I considered purchasing similar models online elsewhere, but remembering the reviews/duds upon arrival and the possibility of having to return whatever I purchased--and knowing I have a Walmart with an easy return policy near by, made my buying choice clear. It's still quite new, so I can't rate it's durability/longevity yet, but the fact that it came out of the box working, gives me hope it will function for a respectable amount of time. If it doesn't, I will try to post a revised product account. All in all, we're enjoying it. The price was good for what it does. Only cons: I would've like it to have a back light function for better night visibility. Also, a wind direction function too. And if I'm making a wish list: sunrise and sunset icons to go along with the moon phase function. And this next con really goes for all of these types of units: They should have a separate temperature sensor (separate from wind and/or rain or other gauges) so that it can be placed where an accurate temperature reading can be taken out of direct sun exposure. I will still give it a 5 star rating for the price, style and what it can do as a unit. What functions it does not have, I was fully aware of when I made my decision to purchase this model. Again, if it fails or flaws, I will try to post an updated review.
This unit does a lot for the price. Temps indoor and out appear reasonably accurate compared to other thermometers and the weather stations. A little high in the afternoon sun but no worse than any others I have had. How well white plastic holds up in the full sun remains to be seen.
I hesitated for some time in purchasing this weather station because I wanted it specifically to watch the wind speed while on my cruising boat. For this unit, like many in this price range, the wind speed is only updated every 18 seconds - a lot can happen in 18 seconds! My home unit is a Healthkit that has a wired connection to the sensor so it shows instantaneous readings. I decided to go with this one because it is a good value for the price. The next size up that would fit my requirements is a Davis unit that updates every 2 1/2 seconds but costs some $300. I haven't had this out on the water yet, but I expect it will suffice for my needs - I'm only interested in seeing what I survived so I can tell a good story! Of course remember that this unit does not tell wind direction - not a problem for me since the boat is always moving and direction would not be of help. Otherwise it is a great deal.
So far so good.... accurate in realtime readings, still in the 14day learning mode to help with weather prediction...so no word yet on overall predecited weather performance just yet. Still would recommend as easy to program, good display and changes are pretty much updated realtime between anonometer and display unit....
This is my second AcuRite weather monitor, the first being the 8" model that only did temperature/humidity/moon phases, but after about a year or so, the outdoor sensor stopped working with the humidity, I suspect it got water in the probe and so it would always stick at 16, 18, or 23% humidity (even when it was raining) First thing I have to say was, I saw it at my local Walmart for about $15 more than it was online, so I did a site-to-store pick-up and got the same model for cheaper! Unfortunately, when I opened it up, I found a package from another product that had been put inside there (which was empty) which means this item was previously owned and returned (as the package inside was from a completely unrelated product, it was actually a set of mini padlocks) Tsk, tsk. But, considering I did get it for 30% off, and there wasn't any apparent damage, twist-ties undone, I didn't make too much of a fuss. Overall it seems to be doing a pretty good job, the weather forecaster on it seems fairly accurate, (if it's raining, it'll show rain, if it's overcast it'll show cloudy). The anemometer is kind of.. iffy. It does pick up wind gusts, but it needs a decent gust to get going, then it spins really easily, so unless you're getting 3~5mph gusts, it's not going to really pick up the lower speeds. The mounting option on this is..... a joke. I have not been able to find a way to side-mount it to a railing or support beam (despite having the ability to do so). And they suggest using a flagpole (which is kind of silly since it also says to keep it out of direct sunlight and rain.) I've had to settle with sticking it in an old tiki torch holder and because of the domed lids on the sensor it actually fits really well! (again, it's exposed to sun and rain) otherwise I'd have to stick it on a table under our deck pavilion which doesn't let the anemometer pick up wind well. The one thing I didn't like at all, in comparison to my last model, was the display does -not- seem to have any backlighting, which makes it hard to see.
this is the second one I have bought they both have to be reset ever couple of days to keep communation between them
