This portable lightning detector does what it says. It works great once you understand how to operate it (read the instruction manual). Just yesterday when a big thunder storm moved through my area the detector detected over 600 strikes in a 25 mile area (ranging from 25 down to 1 mile). The detector will count the number of lightning strikes up to 199 and then if it counts more it will show 199+. I reset mine after it reached 199+ by turning the unit off and back on. Of course this device is not going to catch every strike when they hit the ground 3 to 5 strikes within a few milliseconds of each other). I found the detector very useful with the distance information (lets you know if the storm is moving towards you or away from you). This device runs a long time on just one set of batteries. Bottom line: for the price you can go wrong this is a well made device and gives you a good idea when lightning is headed your way. Those that do not like the device probably have read the instruction manual for it. This device/detector does every thing is says it will do. Note: at times it will say please move to a different location, I found that if it has been detecting strikes and then asks you to move it, just leave it there.... it's resetting its self and it will continue to count the strikes.
I like it a lot the color display and the mini speaker on the device and the beep you can switch it off for 60 minutes or turn it back on the only thing i do not like is the interference when i am trying to use the device indoors i have WI-FI in my House and a laptop Computer i relocate the device from the computer and tv. I would like to know will you guys make a mini carying case for the device to protect it from rain if you get caught out in the rain to protect it sense it is not waterproof.
Love it As advertised & better
Still works after three years. Use it outside and inside. Only problem is the letters (digital) are getting hard to read. The lens is clean, it's just the letter that appear on the screen are failing to make a full word. Other than that, works great.
Carry this while golfing. Good to know if storms are coming.
I have it hanging On my kitchen curtain rod and it's on 24/7 . The Batteries last for every, It's been since November that I turned it on . So about 5 months and they are still going . It has recorded Strikes.
This is a piece of junk. My ears can detect lightning better than this thing. I was outside for an hour with this device on. It said it was "LISTENING", the count was 0, and the distance was blank. Meanwhile, my phone said the lightning was 5 miles away, I could smell a thunderstorm, and I could hear thunder. Finally I gave up and went inside.
I got this because I wanted to take it with me when I was away from home. I have the sensor for at home and it works great. This thing could have lighting go off right next to it and it wouldn't do an alert. I am very disappointed. I wish I would have just bought another regular sensor instead of this piece of junk.
I received this as a Christmas present . I just started using it for Monsoon season as we get a lot of lighting around here. Installed bran new duracell batteries in it and turned it on. first it says to relocate and as I live in a wide open area, I moved about 400 ft from my house, same thing. switched it to indoor mode then a lighting bolt hit about .01 of a mile from me and it didn't do a thing. good thin I didn't depend on it.
Same as the other person commenting negatively on the device, it does not detect lighting reliably and at any distance greater than 1 mile. I tried all of the trouble shooting steps (new batteries, location well away from all sources of interference), to no avail. It detects lighting better in "indoor mode" suggesting that there is a fault in the design; over-filtering. It does not detect lightning strikes that are visible bolts to the ground. The detector constantly says "relocate ...", suggesting that it is picking up interference that does not exist in an open field. I will try to get a refund. The help line for technical support was a 99 minute wait when I tried. Not good.
