I am a musician and wanted audio and video recordings. For audio, I used this with my Tascam 5 recorder...Excellent sound reproduction!..Video..I used my JVC Verio video camera...Wonderful audio with 1080p Video...Sounds great using surround sound audio. I would recommend this mictophone!
Pros: Great Sound Quality, Lightweight, Easy To Use Cons: Other thoughts: I am about to record a short movie to use as my portolio for graphical design/effects. I needed a shotgun microphone and I think I made a good choice when choosing the model and the company. So far it's working perfectly and I am vey happy with my purchase.
This is my first shotgun and though I recognize that it is "value" manufactured and priced it gave great results when I recorded a friend talking to a crowd of 30 in a living room. Extraneous noise was almost non-existent and the speaker's voice 20 feet away was rich, full and accurately sibilant in the higher frequencies. I mounted it in the AT8410a shock mount and that into the hot shoe on a consumer-grade video-tape Handicam and the results were just fine. I got plenty of signal from the mic into the recorder so the sound on a TV set is really good for such an amateurish production. I highly recommend the AT6550, especially for the price and the results. Great job A-T !
I'm seeing a lot of older, negative reviews about audio and the battery not fitting. Perhaps things where change with later versions, because with mine, the battery fits normally and the audio quality is superb. In my case, I bought this to use with a H4N recorder and mounted on the parabolic microphone I built. To my surprise, this worked out perfectly. It's very sensitive and I'm able to pick up clear and crisp sounds from great distances, using the parabolic dish. I do recommend this mic for projects where a shotgun mic is needed.
Pros: Easy to use, Quality item Cons: Limited pickup distance Other thoughts: This is a good budget microphone. Sound quality is good and not tinny. Provides decent pickup to about 10-12 feet then really drops off after that. Good on camera microphone for the hobbiest and way better than an on camera microphone.
For the price of this mic you really cant go wrong. It is an awesome mic with great performance. You do get some background noise / interference but it is not noticeable at all unless you really amp up the sound.
Pros: Simple Use, Durable, Great Sound Quality, Lightweight Cons: Other thoughts: I am a retired photographer and filmmaker. I still produce product and training videos for commercial/industrial companies. The locations are often hostile for both video and audio. I've used the Audio-Technica ATR55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone several times in the 6 weeks I've had the unit. I have been very happy with it so far. I don't use the mic on-camera. It is usually boomed or on a stand to get the mic close to the sound source. I generally use it on the 'Normal' setting. When I have used it in 'Tele' mode, it has done a good job of reaching out and recording specific sounds where it was difficult or impossible to get close to the source. The Tele mode does have a bit of a 'tinny' sound, but nothing that can't be fixed in post. Everyone has different equipment needs and expectations. I guess that explains the diversity of opinions. Being retired, I don't have the equipment budget I used to have. I needed a new shotgun mic and for [$] I figured the ATR55 was probably worth a try. I obviously can't speak for its longevity, but so far it has performed very well. In 'Normal' mode it will give you good usable audio that can be tweaked if necessary in your editing program. As one other reviewer noted, the 'Tele' mode is just an added bonus should you choose to use it.I would buy the ART55 again and would certainly recommend it to others if, as with all equipment, it is used properly.

Mostly for interviews in the style of news reporters on location. I get awesome sound quality from this mic. Very crisp and clear. Very affordable! The cable is relatively short due to fact that it was actually meant to be mounted on top of your camera so I have to use an extension cord to make it longer. (Not a problem). I only wish the 3.5mm plug was stereo so it can capture audio on both left and right channels.
Pros: Lightweight, Great Sound Quality, Easy To Use, Durable Cons: Other thoughts: I use this mike to record a class/seminar, the speaker being about 15 ft. away. The room has a high ambient noise level which this mike is capable of minimizing. If you can live with the short unbalanced cable, you can't beat the mike for the price.
This mic worked fine for about 4 years until I started using it near the pool. I believe moisture did it in finally. _Great camera/cell-phone mic for home use for the money (you need a TRRS-to-TRS adapter to use this with a computer). For in-room or close-up outdoor recording the cardioid setting worked great, either from the camera or hanging from a boom. Noise only really became a problem using the more powerful supercardioid setting, but I found I could clean it up using noise-removal apps in post production (download Audacity sound editor free). Supercardioid picked up my dad talking in a soft voice from 15 feet away, but hiss needed to be removed in post. _Because I used this to make semiprofessional music videos for Youtube, to improve the recording quality and remove hiss, I bought an iRig cell phone amp for this (best used at no more than 1/3 volume to reduce noise).
