First issued to theaters in 1986, The Toxic Avenger single handedly launched its parent studio, Troma Films - an outlet that became known for low-brow, campy trash pictures. The original movie told of Melvin (Mark Torgl), a nerdy, put-upon janitor at a health club who accidentally falls into a vat of toxic waste and emerges as a deformed superhero (Mitchell Cohen) - something like a cross between The Incredible Hulk and The Elephant Man. Several sequels followed, including 1989's The Toxic Avenger - Part II and The Toxic Avenger - Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000), and then an animated series called Toxic Crusaders. This box set from Troma features all four films, plus all thirteen episodes of the animated series, plus a documentary, Apocalypse Soon: The Making of Citizen Toxie.
