I usually like colorful items, but black was the only option and I chose it because it is made of fabric and seems sturdy. There is a nice fine white stitch for contrast that gives classy look. When I open it, the cover is not flying out like someone else commented. It is a perfect addition to my classic decor in my office and it won't scratch, considering it is lined with fabric on the outside.
The file case has a plastic latch that will close off center and jam. The only way to open the file requires breaking the latch. The file also springs open like a slinky and the contents fall out.
