This telescope is a great value. Its 70mm lens is much better than the 60mm usually found in a telescope in this range. People generally focus on magnification in evaluating a telescope, but the size of the objective lens is just as important. As a practical matter, useful magnification is about 50 to 60 times per inch of objective lens; there are 25mm to an inch. Any magnification above that is largely useless. This telescope has a useful magnification of about 175x, achievable with its included 4mm eyepiece. This is enough for most observation needs. You do not need to use the included Barlow Lens. Even an expensive instrument can only rarely benefit by much higher power, due to atmospheric conditions. Another thing I like about it is that it uses an Azimuth mount, not an Equatorial. An Equatorial is a pain to set up and use, and it must be set up EXACTLY right to work or it is useless. This is only for the serious amateur. Another point is that an Equatorial will not track the moon and planets, it is used only for the "fixed stars". If you just want to look at the moon or planets or Orion as well as use it for terrestrial observation, you are much better off with an Azimuth mount that this telescope has. This is particularly true if it is meant as a gift to a juvenile. If you give such a person a telescope with an Equatorial mount, you are likely to turn him off from Astronomy for good. This is a good telescope for a juvenile. The laser finder provided with it works quite well for getting visible objects in the field of view of the eyepiece. The mount is sturdy and the three eyepieces give a good range from 35, 70, to its its maximum useful 175x. All in all, an excellent value.
I bought this as a gift for my granddaughter, but it takes more time to set up and has extras that is not practical for her. I was impressed with the telescope. It is a great one for someone who is more advanced in sky and land viewing and knows how to properly care for a delicate instrument.
Other stores were selling this scope for 75 to 100+ dollars. I got it for half price and it gets better. Before i purchased this scope i was thinking about getting a red dot finder scope for my other scope. One similar to the celestrons finder was 25-40 dollars. This celestron was 40+- on amazon, but for some reason that scope did not come with a red dot finder. So for what i would have paid for a red dot finder online, I got a 70mm scope, tripod , an extra lens almost for free. I would say that is a good value. Yes this celestron is not a high quality refractor, but for looking at the brighter objects in the sky it does allright. The lenses that come with this scope are low quality as well. But i have better 1 1/4 inch lenses. And if you get interested in astronomy, you will buy better lenses that will give you a much improved viewing experience. I also have a refractor scope with an equatorial mount but this scopes alt. az. mount is much easier to use and less frutrating for a beginner. This scope also works as a pretty decent spotter scope for day light viewing. And compared to my other scope, witch is a 60 mm , this celestron is amazingly light weight. As i said, for about 40 dollars this is a STEAL....THANKS WALMART
EXCELLENT FOR THE PRICE; PERFECT FOR ENTRY LEVEL; THE GOOD: PRICE AN EASY TO USE, THE BAD: FIXED AZIMUTH ITS HARD TO GET. I UPLOADED A PICTURE OF THE MOON, THE CONDITIONS WHERE REALLY BAD AND I HAD A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE MOON. GET IT KNOW FROM WALMART BEFORE THE PRICE CHANGE!
The optics on this telescope are quite good. I looked at the full moon with this telescope witch for a refractor is a good test of the objective lens quality. Only a slight ring of false color around the extreme edge of the field of view was seen. The lunar disk showed up sharp and distinct all the way up to the edge where this slight amount of chromatic aberration appeared. The amount of false color was indeed minimal and quite acceptable. I then turned the telescope to the planet Jupiter and was easily able to see the moons of Jupiter and the Equatorial Cloud Belts on the planets surface clearly with no chromatic interference. I found the slow motion tracking control to be a very good and useful feature of this scope, however the scope does suffer from a tripod that in my opinion could be a little taller. Overall I find this telescope to be a good choice for either beginner or even a somewhat advanced astronomer, Like myself, to purchase.
This product is perfect for entertainment. It's great for closer views of the moon and it's craters. Don't expect to see "far away galaxies" like the ad and box promote. It's an inexpensive "toy" that is pretty cool. The tripod and construction is really nice for the cost.
Now for this price I definitely did not expect much but this did surprise me. The construction is mostly plastic but that's okay cause it is cheap, The tripod is amazingly good quality, and the quality of the image seen is very nice but remember it's plastic so it can be better. Overall great for kids and as this was my first telescope buy I can't compare much but I do own two DSLR's and am impressed at the distance I can view with this (I can take a picture through the very small eye piece with my DSLR). Toys had also proven to be useful in shooting range sighting for extreme distances and extreme remote bird or animal watching but the most you can do is gaze at the moon as the stars are only a big dot anyways. Galaxies are oh so much further away lol! Overall a great buy for around the house and you don't have to worry about it as much as if it was an expensive one. Great for getting the younger ones interested in more complex wonderful things.
I purchased this as a gift for my son--it is his first telescope. I was impressed with the quality of the images we can see through the scope--very clear. Very easy to assemble. I found images of stars/planets that can be seen with this telescope posted on Amazon.
Based on relative good reviews about this product I bought it at Walmart.com for $38 for my son. The setup is very easy. However I could not see anything unless I move the eyepiece away from the diagonal reflector or use the barlow lens. I suspect mines is a bad unit of the product. Yesterday there was a rare break of cloud in my area. With the barlow, I was able to see Saturn with ring. The image is very fuzzy. I have been in contact with Celestron about the issue and waiting for their reply.
Completely not what I expected. Saw the outline of the moon, could not get it to zoom in far enough to see anything else. Read the instructions several times, but still was not able to see more than the moon outline. It's nice and grey. That's about it. I will be returning it to the store.
