About the Author: This book was written by H.A. Rey. He is a writer and an illustrator. Character: The two characters in this book is a monkey and a man. The monkey goes by George and the man was called the Man in The Yellow Hat. Plot/ Summary:The first adventure in this series tells how Curious George, caught in the jungle and brought back to the city by a man in a yellow hat, George can't help being interested in all the new things around him. Though well meaning, George's curiosity always gets him into trouble. Theme: The theme of this story is George being curious and aways getting into lots of trouble. Setting: The setting of this book mainly takes place in the city. Two direct quotes from the book: "We will have to shut you up" pg. 38 "George" pg. 50 Recommendations: This is a fun and entertaining book. I would recommend teachers to include it in their library. The monkeys actions exemplify the same actions as the age of a reader reading this book would.

The original-mine says 1941 renewed 1969. All time favs. this little monkey is so funny when he has a smoke on the bed. of course out dated in the sense it calls the cop fat. all in all a sweet story. You are so glad he makes it to the zoo before anyone really gets hurt..LOL

I found this book to be entertaining as well as slightly informational. The author uses context within the book that is comprehensible for young readers, but uses some strong context. The author uses matching illustrations which make it easier to understand the story that is taking place. I also like how the author uses repetition within their writing with their use of "curious". This writing style is important for young readers and writers to be able to identify, as well as model within their own writing.

George lived in Africa. The little monkey was always curious, so when the man in the yellow hat saw him, he put the hat on the ground and George came over to try it on. But the man had a devious plan and he captured the little monkey and put him in a bag. Then he put the monkey in a little boat and took him to a big ship. George was sad. But he was still curious. And there were many things to discover on the big ship. When the trip was over, the man took George to his house in the city. What will happen to George in the big city? What will he discover next? ========= Curious young readers will delight in George's many adventures as he discovers new things. They will also be able to relate to George's propensity for getting into trouble even though he means well. Charming illustrations highlight the innocence of the little monkey while showcasing his many adventures. Young readers are sure to become staunch fans of the little monkey who cannot help but explore and discover new things. Recommended.

This is a book that was very popular from my childhood. I love the simple illustrations of a curious monkey who constantly gets in trouble. Although they could be much better if the colors were more vibrant. But overall they are very clear about what is going on which is good for young children. This book is perfect for young children who are curious and imaginative. It shows what could happen to them if they get into mischief. But this book could also encourage children to explore their surroundings and use their imagination. One thing about this book that I did not particularly like was that there were times when the pictures and text did not exactly match up.One example of this was when George was taken from Africa by the man in the yellow hat. The text says "George was sad" but then the pictures shows the exact opposite. George is with the man in the yellow hat and is smiling and looks very happy. To a young child this could be very confusing because the book says one thing but the pictures show another. Overall, I liked this book because it was such a main part of my childhood. I remember reading these books with my mom and that was the best.

Curious George is, of course, a mischievous little monkey who gets taken from his home in Africa and brought to live in the big city by the man in the yellow hat. Along the way he gets in many misadventures including falling off a big boat, accidentally calling the fire department and causing them trouble, getting put in jail, getting blown away with a handful of balloons, and finally getting put in the zoo. This is long for a picture book, but the text is simple and would be a good introduction to indpendent reading for newer readers. I think the characterization of George is what has made these books so popular - he's sweet, naive, often misunderstands or takes things too literally, etc. I think kids identify with him. The illustrations are bright, old-fashioned, lovely. I'm pretty sure they were originally done with a limited color palette but have been "colorized" in subsequent reprints? The story itself is kind of disturbing in retrospect: George is basically kidnapped/poached from Africa by the Man in the Yellow Hat, he's nonsensically "jailed" for calling in a false alarm to the fire department, and finally he ends up in the zoo - you know, trapped in a cage rather than running around free in Africa. This is very different from the Curious George most kids are probably used to seeing via the movies and the PBS show.

Curious George (Three stars) is a good book for beginner readers. It is a fun story for children about a monkey's adventure with his human owner. Teachers could have this book for their student's downtime.

I'd have to agree with some of the other reviews - it's a pretty disturbing story. I'm sure a 3 or 4 year old wouldn't be able to see it, but I'm fairly certain a 6 year old would have a few questions about why the Man in the Yellow Hat stole George from he jungle and threw him in a zoo. Maybe if they hadn't ripped him from his home George wouldn't be acting out? I thought I remembered this story differently, but I guess not. 2 stars because the illustrations were good and...well... it's kind of a classic.

I actually really disliked this book. I don't like that the story basically says that George does all these bad things, causes all this mischief, and just gets away with it. I think it sends a bad message to kids. Also, I think it's sad that the story starts out with George being stolen from Africa, and ends with him being put in a zoo. Not what I was expecting! Very disappointing.
