Purchased this last year after 12 years of splitting wood with a maul. I was reluctant to buy a splitter because I really didn't think it would save much time. I was wrong. I load up the bed of the truck with logs, place the splitter on the tailgate, and my trailer or wheelbarrow below that to catch or drop in the split wood. Pros: Inexpensive. Portable. Plenty of power to split most of the logs I cut (<17" long, <14" diameter). Is working fine into the second season. Cons: Nothing much. I think the user's manual could include more information. I bought a 12 gauge ext. cord but am unsure if that's necessary. I also don't know if any of the surfaces should be cleaned more to extend the life of the unit.
After fighting to get the screws started to mount the shields around the lever controls, I was ready to go. If i knew then what I know now, I would have purchased this years ago. It is simple to operate, and has performed flawlessly so far. I like its portability and relative light weight. Some have complained about the need for using 2 hands to operate; this is not a problem, and makes for safe operation by keeping you away from the end of the machine where the split log falls or ejects from the log splitter. By that I mean, I had some hard wood that basically flew past the splitting wedge at the end opposite the control lever end, keeping me out of the flight path
This splitter is not industrial strength but it's fine for home backyard use and splitting 18” logs for the fireplace. Fairly easy to set up and operate. By following the directions and not overloading the splitter or trying to get it to do things it wasn't designed to do, my splitter has worked just fine.
I have had several small and large trees taken down around my home and the EARTHQUAKE splitter has handled all but the largest logs. It's portability is great and stores in an upright position so gets out of the way when your not using it. It has sure saved my back from the old fashion method of splitting with an axe. Priced right and handles 99% of my splitting needs.
I'm happy the wife made me buy it, it made splitting some of the wood I had much easier. for hard woods and even soft woods that are not dry, it doesn't have the punch to split the wood. It also needs a wider wheel base to move over ground that is uneven. But even with that said I am very pleased with it's preformance so far
Bought this a couple weeks ago to split a trailer of oak. Works pretty good, with the exception of the bigger pieces. Cut an X with my chainsaw on the wedge end of the logs and it splits them with no problem. Would recommend putting pointed studs on the ram end to help hold and keep it from slipping off when in operation.
Device works fine. Only concern is leading edge of splitter blade is radiused not knife edge. As a result logs pop part and can fly several feet. Would be better if splitter edge were sharp like most other splitters to slice into the log and separate.
I've gotten tired of chopping wood by hand, but I didn't want to buy a big gas engine log splitter. I wanted to go smaller and electric. I bought this and it works as promised. I've had no problems. It's meant for smaller logs and that's how I use it. It's simple and easy to operate. Don't expect to be splitting huge pieces of hardwood. It's not meant for that.
I have it mounted on the basement wall at a comfortable working height. The splitter is next to the wood burner so it is handy when splitting some pieces for kindling. The Earthquake has done everything that I expected it to do and have no regrets about purchasing it. It was just what I was looking for.
I had this log spilter for a few months now and over all it's been great. The only thing I absolutely can't stand is the two Hand operation. Because the log will roll as a splitter vibrates causing the log to split unevenly Etc. I really don't like holding a button and pulling a lever at the same time. I get that it's a safety thing but it's a real time consumer. Other than that it's a tough little splitter.
