These are super fun for my kids, especially my emergent reader in first grade and my third grader who says (direct quote), "They're so fun!"
This set has been a great addition to our homeschooling resources. My five year old only recently began to read so she can't do the cards completely on her own yet, but she has lots of fun with them. She is currently working at an upper Kindergarten/lower first grade level. She loves the noises that the pen makes and she enjoys working her way through the cards. I like that the pen has a muted but lighted mode, too, for more quiet times. I also really like that the pen instantly lets her know if her answer is correct or incorrect. We are very pleased with this set and definitely recommend it. We did receive a free set in exchange for our honest opinion about it.
We received this product to review. We have used several of the Hot Dots Jr products and really loved them. This one is great too! My six year old daughter probably does not love it as much as I do- but she has enjoyed it. I love that it helps them learn in a fun way. She does not play with it often- probably because it feels more like school- but I anticipate taking it on trips where I think she will really enjoy it.
I use this set in my 3rd grade class. The questions are good for review for my students in an independent center. They may be more difficult content for 1st graders, probably just right for 2nd grade. I have the set of 6 pens sold separately to make it into a center rotation. I will need to purchase more boxed sets of cards to make it last longer as once they memorize the question, it's too easy :)
I have heard great things from Erica on Confessions of a Homeschoolers about the Hot Dots. I think my kids would find this just as useful and enjoyable!
Hot Dots are FUN! We homeschool and my 2nd grader loves learning and practicing his vocabulary with these cards. There are 400 cards practicing vocabulary for grades 1-3. There are cards for 4 subject areas: Lang. Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Great for review over the summer too!
We are a homeschool family who is fortunate to live in a state where we don't have many requirements and so I love that we can learn about things in an organic real life way. Sometimes, though, the list-checker side of me wonders where the "gaps" are. Not so much because I think I can fill in all. the. gaps. , but because I know that we don't do EVERYTHING every year. When we received these Academic Vocabulary cards for grades 1-3, I was apprehensive. I thought it might be something about preparing for standardized testing or something but it's not. It's more of a super quick once over of material that a child should have learned during 1-3 grades. There are 50 double-sided cards with 4 questions each in the subjects of language arts, math, science and social studies. The topics are widely varied and cover everything from punctuation and literature to place value and fractions, from physical science to life science, and goverment, geography & family. These use the simple Hot Dots pen for self correction, though if you do not have the pen, there is an answer key card. We like to learn through good books and it's good to know if there are any areas where we haven't spent much time. As a homeschooler, I would use it as an assessment tool at the end of second grade to see what they know and what I need to find a good book (or two) about for next year. You could also use it at the end of third grade and fill in the "holes" in a light worksheet-based summer school. As always, the cards are super high quality and work well with the hot dots pen (not included). The box contains all the cards (complete with dividers by subject) and leaves room for a hot dots pen, making it great for learning on the go. We really love the Hot Dots learning materials and this set was no different. I highly recommend it for any education minded parent, no matter how they are educated. Disclaimer: We received this item in exchange for an honest review.
I just received the hot dots pen and a couple sets of hot dots cards and I was skeptical if the pen would actually work but it does!! I tested it out on multiple cards and it responded to the answer choices as it should have. I am super excited for my first grade ESOL students to use it! I want to get the learning to problem solve cards for math because it actually works on solving math word problems and not just facts. I think this is a great tool for students who do not have someone to correct them while PRACTICING (not during learning time). One issue I have is that the pen does not do anything when I push the music note button. Can anyone help?
I thought the pen was included: wrong!
I like the actual card content but the "self learning / self rewarding "pen" is absolute Garbage! It plays rewarding music each time you press down on the pen. It does not matter which "Hot Dot" you're clicking on. This equipment has NO TECHNOLOGY whatsoever in it. It's completely mis-marketed.
