I purchased the entire water filtration system in 2004. At the time, I also bought this spare ceramic filter. After 11 years, I'm ready to throw out the original filter & use the new one. I just ordered 2 more for many more river trips. We were never sure when to toss out the old filter until today. My husband returned home from a 7-day river trip, and I always get the task of cleaning the filter, which is no hard job. So, when I noticed what appeared to be glue smeared on the filter, I got out the calipers & measured the old filter against the new one. The old filter is 1/4 inch narrower! We've never gotten sick from the filtered water, but don't want to chance it by using the old, worn-out one. This old filter has been used on the muddy Colorado River, the Tatshenshini-Alsek Rivers, the South Nehani River, the Salmon River, the Snake River, and many more. It does filth up easily, & that's because it's doing its job. River runners on multi-day trips with find this product a cheaper way to filter versus using the more expensive Katadyne hand-pumping system. However, you do need a tall tree or boulder because it's a gravity flow system. I highly recommend this filter.
