Sata cable did not work

I planned to use a Sata cable connection to the motherboard. The Sata cable included with the package would not fit into the motherboard socket, and it would not fit into the socket on the external drive. I used the USB 3 cable, connected to a USB 2 external socket on my computer. USB 3 at the external HD, and USB 2 to the computer which allowed the device to function. With that said, it seems to work well as a backup device.
