I've had mine over 5yrs. Granted it's not going to put a new edge on a REALLY dull knife, but if you need to freshen up one that's not quite sharp enough to use safely, it's great! I'll run my knife thru each of the stages 10 or 15 times before I attempt to slice tomatoes, dice an onion or trim fat ect from a piece of meat. I thought it was well worth the money. If you're looking for something that's going to more, you need to invest in a good 3 stage professional knife sharpener such as ProChef.
This was a present to my mother who has tried one or more other sharpeners that don't sharpen. She tried this one numerous times and could not get it to sharpen the dull knives she has. I gave it a try too, using a piece of paper to test the sharpness of the knives before and after using this product. I did not see any improvement in sharpness. If there is a trick to sharpening, not mentioned in the instructions, we could not figure it out. Maybe cheap price equates to poor sharpening service? I know we used to be able to sharpen on a grinder that was on the back of a can opener she no longer has, and there was a bit of a trick to using that. Given the compact size and brand name of this product it is especially disappointing it does not work.
