The only con I have so far is the pressure release valve. Need to re-engineer that!!! I finally got it to stop leaking but will not touch it again. The only way I can change the filter now is to close the main valve and release the pressure from a faucet in the house then set to Bypass or Off on the unit. No big deal just an extra step....
I have owned about 20 of these over the last 10 years, have to keep replacing them because the relief valve keeps failing.otherwise this a great filter, all the features I want, bypass valve and clear sump.my only other complaint is filters are not cheap.I do hope GE will address this relief button problem, because everyone I know who owns one of these has a relief button problem.the best way I have found with dealing it is to push in several times and try to turn it while pushing it in.I know it is difficult but it can be done.I hope GE realizes we would rather pay a few dollars more for the filter with a better relief valve so it is problem free.happier customers!
I've had this water filter for a few years. My unit just developed the leaking red button. I bought the same model so I don't have to do any plumbing modifications. Going forward,I won't use the red button.
The plastic canister cracked. Water pressure 50psi. We were away all day and came back to 4" of water in the finished basement. Resulted in a lot of damage to the house. Please, never buy this product!
I just re-plumbed the entire area between our well and the main house supply line including a new water softener, room for an iron filter, and this water filter. 50-something solder joints on 3/4" copper, and everything worked PERFECT when I turned the water on. Now, a month later, I went to change the filter for the first time. I put the unit in bypass, hit the pressure-relief button for a second to eliminate the pressure, then changed the filter. However, when I turned the water supply back ON, the pressure relief button started SPEWING water out the center hole!!! 3-4 attempts at re-seating the button have all failed to even slow the leak. So now, I have to leave it in bypass (which, by the way, still releases a drip every 10-15 seconds) until I can go buy a DIFFERENT-BRAND replacement and return this one!!!
The housing cracked and sprayed water in storage closet which then flooded the basement. This failure caused damage to insulation, door, wall and ruined many items that were stored in closet. Had to hire water mitigation to come in for four days to remove water and dry basement.
The filter housing cracked and flooded my finished basement.
After 4-5 years the canister cracker at the top by the threading and FLOODED our back room. Ruined flooring and plywood underneath! Luckily my wife heard the leak and we shot the water off. We tried to use the handle on the filter but it would not shut the water off completely so turned main supply. We were so luck we were home and awake. This could have been a very serious proble, Why would this happen? Clog in the line after the filter? Line is clear. The line in the ice maker after the filter (med size commercial Scotsman Ice maker) is clogged? Nope it's fine. Water is flow without any restriction and making ice.
This is try #2 and pressure relief button leaks if you touch it once. This has been an on going problem with this product. The product needs to be diss-continued.
After spending much time trying to fix the leaking red pressure relief button after using it to switch out the filter, I have concluded that the o-ring seating of the relief button is prone to failure thus causing the device to leak after being re-pressurized. After speaking with GE customer service and reading the information from other users with problem GE filters, the best solution GE could come up with was to stop using the red pressure relief button and instead flush your toilet, after the water is turned off, to relieve water pressure to allow for filter servicing. They also told me I could exchange or return my filter. They seemed totally unimpressed by the frequency and similarity of the other complaints on this unit.
