A Winner

This machine is hands down a winner. Based on the internet ratings reviews the past few weeks I bought this grill today, after looking at it at my local Walmart yesterday. Concerns over the contaminated food issues in Europe right now prompted me to start grilling my vegetables as a health safety measure prior to making wraps with them. It heats up fast, browns the vegetables and shrimp within minutes, and is easy to clean. The plates snap out and in with a push of a button on the sides of the frames. There are four (4) plates, a set of 2 grill plates, and a set of 2 plain griddle plates for pancakes, hash browns, eggs and bacon, and more. The grill also folds out flat for a larger double cooking surface. The temperature and griddle and grill dials are easy to read, and use. I used a small stainless pitcher with a small rounded spout hooked under the grease drip drain instead of the plastic one supplied with it after reading the plastic one melts from the heat. A small stainless cream pitcher like the ones used in some restaurants would serve the purpose nicely. I give it five stars on all points. Well made and made to last. I thank Walmart for coming up with the one year replacement program offer at the check out register for a few dollars more. I will be buying all of my small appliances and electronics at Walmart now that I know about this program.

We love this grill! Easy to clean and quick to heat up! The temperature settings are perfect, we use it at least 1-2 times a day! Works great for tortillas too!

Easy to use for either grilling or cooking on the flat griddle. Clean-up is a breeze. I put a little foil around the grease-catcher spout although I've really never had a problem with it melting.

I honestly use this almost everyday. I've made phenomenal paninis, steaks, boness chicken breasts, grilled cheese, mini cakes in ramekins (google it) , GRILLED VEGGIES, fajitas, ....I could go on forever...so easy, I never feel like I can't whip out dinner. Grilled asparagus like no other...also grilled zucchini and peppers to die for in minutes.... I don't know what I did without one....can u feel the excitement? I'm serious u will love it... :)

love it, love it. It makes the greatest quasedillas. Grilled sandwiches. That is what we have done so far. Makes the new puffy thick flour tortillas(with a little butter on tortills) crispy not chewy like microwave. The size is just right for us. We live in mobile home and space is at a premium. If it just had waffle plates but still love it for the price.

The grill itself is awesome. It's great for me (a college student) on a limited budget for cooking with a small kitchen. the thing works as a grill or a griddle with multiple easily removable and cleanable hot plates. the one major issue on this grill, however, is that the grease-catching cups melt just by being close to the grill itself. some metal cups would cure this problem easily, but unfortunately the engineering on the grill doesn't allow for just anything to be placed directly next to the grill to catch the grease, the cups require a lip that extend over the bulky base to the rim of the hot plate. it would be worthy of 5 stars across the board if the grease cups were metallic, but unfortunately your cups will melt and you'll get grease all over your counter by the second time you decide to cook burgers on this thing. I attached a photo for the inevitable fate of your grease cups, as this has happened to both of mine, regardless of distance from the grill

Design was a great idea, but poor execution

There's so much about this that ought to be wonderful but, in practice, this grill misses the mark over and over again. OK, 100 points for looking good, another 50 points for reasonably accurate thermo control, but minus several million for all the afterthoughts once the product left the original design team. I'm sure there are folks who use the full-open option and actually do large surface grilling with this but our usage is closed-lid grilling (when we want lots of space to grill we either use stove-top grill or light up the charcoal BBQ on the patio). Since we don't use the griddle option at all we can't speak to that. Basically, this was designed to be a GF grill on steroids. It's only a pretender, though, and the champ still reigns. 1. The lower grill surface is horizontal. No tilt. Meat fats and juices pool up under the meat and bake onto the grill surface until the pool gets so large it finally is forced to find a place to go. Late in the cooking stage, it manages to find the corner drain opening and flows into the grease cup, but by then a good quantity is stuck to your grill surface. We bough a couple of stick-on rubber feet at the H*me Dep*t and attached them to the rear legs of this grill. It's just a slight tilt but the grease runs freely, now, and there is little build-up of baked-on fats between the ridges of the grill surface. 2. Coil-covered wire from the base to the top heating element is positioned in a bad spot. It's at the back of the unit, towards the left, rather than being contained within the handle arms. Problem: When you raise the lid during/after cooking, the grease runs straight down the upper grill surface and drips not only onto the countertop, but also onto the coil-covered wire. The grease and oil can't be cleaned from inside this coil, and eventually it makes its way into the base unit itself. There's always the smell of rancid fat around our GE grill. 3. While we haven't had the experience of a melted fat cup, we are scratching our heads as to who came up with this design. It 's a rather largish cup positioned to the right/front corner (not in the photos, here). It is totally in the way of everything. It's easy to knock while preparing other foods, setting down utensils or just opening the lid to test for doneness and your hand accidentally knocks the cup. At best, the cup will remain upright but pushed away from the grill, so grease drains onto the grill body and your countertop for a few moments. At worst, the grease in the cup is spilled and goes all over your counter and floor. Bad design, Really, really, really bad design. 4. The temp control is a nice touch. Besides being off by 40 degrees on our unit, there is another problem with it that defeats the idea of a dial control. It is both (1) super free-turning, that is, no resistance at all and (2) has no detents whatsoever. Wipe up any splatters in front of the grill during cooking and you're bound to knock the temp control. When you do, it turns so freely you won't notice you've hit it with your towel and the temperature is now changed to something you DON'T want. This control needs some stiffness to it so it doesn't spin so easily, or it needs 4 or 5 detents so if you do knock it, it won't go past the detent and you don't end up with burnt or raw meat. 5. Our last gripe is the design of the housing in the base, It sticks out on all 4 sides and its bottom edge is rounded over instead of having a drip lip. Result: spatters on the housing (and there are a lot) flow down the housing, flow along the curved underside edged and get into everything under the unit. They also get into the front controls. Placing the controls on the base (as opposed to the lid) makes sense for this grill, due to the lid opening 180 degrees. However, there needs to be modifications to the housing to make it difficult for grease and fat to spread all over the vertical and undersides, and get behind the tunable front controls. We've used ours about 30 times since buying it. We used to have GF grills and would always buy GF when a grill wore out or otherwise got damaged or broken (easy to do when you entertain a lot and there are kids in the kitchen all the time). These are generally much safer than stove-stop grills and help pull fats away from meats for a little healthier eating. We're sold on the concept of countertop, electric grills with grease drains. But when this GE unit fails we're going back to GF. It isn't a good deal when someone has a "great idea" but fails to follow through to ensure it works well in the customers' homes. This isn't a bad grill, and if it's the only grill you can afford (no BBQ or outdoor grill, no stove-top grill), we say buy it if you really need to open it flat for large cooking areas. But for closed-cover cooking of anything that will drip fat and grease, give it a miss.

I bought this GE 4 in 1 Grill / Griddle a couple of weeks ago and used it twice since. While the concept is great, it doesn't perform as well as one might assume. I made thick hamburgers and while they were juicy and very good, it took more time than usual to cook. The same effect applies to the thick steaks that I've made. This was used when flat, maybe it will do a better job with lid down. The grease did pop all over the stove but, my plastic drip cups didn't melt because I completely wrapped them in foil. I love the fact that I was able to place the removable grill plates in my dishwasher and they were clean for the most part. I'm going to try using the grill again tonight but with chicken. Wish me luck!

I used it this afternoon and when I turned it on and went to flatten to a “griddle” position, I got the shocked! I have used my griddle maybe 3 - 4 times and it still looks brand new. There is no explanation that I could see, as to why this would shock me AND it took forever to grill butternut squash.
