Each year at the marathon in New York City, tens of thousands of people run through the streets of all five boroughs. Millions of people stand by the side of the road to cheer. Of all the cheers you'll hear, the one heard most often, and typically the loudest, is "GO ACHILLES!" Achilles was founded in 1983 to give people with disabilities an opportunity to participate in mainstream events. By building membership one athlete at a time, Achilles became a group that supported its members and encouraged them to compete. Lives were changed as goals were accomplished and gradually new chapters were added. Twenty-five years later, Achilles has members in more than 70 countries. Programs have been developed for children, for wounded veterans, and for athletes to compete in tandem biking and triathlons. With our Achilles Marathon Tour, athletes conquer 26.2 miles in competitions around the country and internationally. For shorter distances, the Achilles HOPE & POSSIBILITY is becoming our signature event. Our goal is to be inclusive, where able-bodied and disabled athletes participate together. Achilles athletes are amputees, blind, paralyzed, have cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, heart transplansts, lung transplants, most anything you can think of, but they continue to achieve. GO ACHILLES! illustrates some of the people and stories that have exemplified the Achilles spirit over the past 25 years, including Trisha Meili, known as The Central Park Jogger and David Paterson, an Achilles member who became the first visually impaired Governor of the State of New York. Within the full color collection of photographs and short stories, you can discover more about: *The Early Years *International Chapters *NYC and Domestic Chapters *Achilles Kids Program *The importance of competition in mainstream Marathons *FREEDOM TEAM program for wounded veterans *Our signature race - the Hope & Possibility For anyone going through a difficult time, particularly those who are physically challenged, their families, friends, neighbors, caretakers and physicians, Go Achilles! offers a new perspective on the hope & possibility ahead of us in life. It makes a great gift!
