I bought this ice machine a month ago and it is GREAT.....
I am really pleased with this ice maker. Very quiet and makes ice fast. I highly recommend this brand, I had another brand, which cost more and there is no comparison, this one is a 10.
This is a great ice maker and a must have if you have guests who use a lot of ice and your refrigerator ice maker can keep up with the demand.
I've been eyeing this icemaker ever since I saw a co-worker with one but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger with the prices hovering near $100. I drink multiple quarts of tea and water at work so I've been religiously hauling ice from the freezer at home in insulated bags for over two years now and throwing them in my freezer here in my office. When this unit went on sale for nearly HALF of the regular price? I jumped at the opportunity. There was a glitch in ordering but Walmart came through with a simple phone call and I received the unit - albeit a little bit later than first promised. No matter, because this little workhorse cranks out ice at an incredible rate! I swear the first cubes dumped into the hopper within 10 minutes of powering the unit on. As others may have noted here? This unit is not a freezer so your cubes do melt in the hopper but because it produces new cubes so quickly. Who cares? Always plenty of ice - especially for one or two people - but I do plan to take the unit home whenever I throw a party. It will be great to supplement the ice maker at home. With advanced planning? No need to purchase extra ice either. Turn on the unit the day before, bag up extra ice, throw it in the deep freeze and you're good to go. The cubes are about the size of your average home icemaker cubes but sort of hollow in the middle and a softer texture - which is great for an ice chewing addict like me! Cubes are sort of bullet shaped. Through simple indicator lights on the front, the unit tells you when the hopper is full, water is low, and the power status. No muss. No fuss. Best small appliance I've bought in several years! Highly recommended, especially on sale.
Look, don't expect this little gem to keep up with your party needs - It probably won't. And, that's especially true if you wait until an hour before party time to fire it up. What it will do is make several small, round 'cups' of ice about every 10 minutes. In four hours, it made a decent amount of ice by filling the included ice basket/bucket. Maybe 2 pounds of ice from a "warm" start. It seems to make ice faster after it has been running a while which is expected. The ice 'cups' are about an inch in diameter, 1.25" high, round on one end, flat on the other with a hole part way through the center. You could actually drink from them like a small ice mug - But, doing so wouldn't quench much of a thirst! After shutting it down, I drained the remaining water from the reservoir - It was 45 degrees. So, it will also make COLD water. Not gallons but pints or quarts of it at a time. I'm unsure how much of this cold water is attributable directly to the cooling power of the unit or how much is related to melting ice. The ice bucket sits above the water reservoir and any water from melting ice goes into the reservoir. Pretty neat. That's right, once the ice is made, the unit does not refrigerate it directly - It simply sits there and is able to melt a bit. However, as the amount of ice increases, it tends to be self refrigerating in a way. Plus, the melting ice makes the reservoir water colder so it all works out pretty well. In normal use, any melting shouldn't be a big concern. Another thing - When you drain it, by removing the small, white cap on the back, BE CAREFUL that you don't lose the rather small, white rubber plug that is inside the cap. It can easily get past most kitchen sink drains. You should find a spare plug in a plastic bag inside the box . . . Guess Hamilton Beach saw that one coming. It might keep up with the needs of a family of four. And, maybe even MY family of two because we use a good bit of ice - Like morning, noon and night. I bought it to use in my shop in the backyard and for power outages . . . I know, it USES power. Ah, but, with this small ice maker and even a small generator, you can have ice without having to open your refrigerator! And, that's just a side benefit - Sort of like the toaster oven/grill we got a while back - You can use both for regular stuff AND during power outages without having to power the entire house. The ice maker label shows the power requirement to be 110-120 volts at 1.8 amps - So, 200 to 220 watts. Not much at all. I'm thinking you should be able to power it from an inverter from a car, camper or other battery. A "pure" sine wave unit would probably be best. Noise - Not much. It gurgles a bit when it fills the ice making tray with water and you can hear the ice falling into the bucket. But, that's just a small reminder that your Hamilton Beach ice maker is on the job, doing its assigned task just as expected. Noisy? In no way would I call it noisy. It probably makes less noise than a refrigerator's ice maker. I've owned mine for a very short time. So, longevity is yet to be determined. But, so far, so good. If it keeps working like it did the first time, it will be money well spent.
I got this because I don't like to fill ice cube trays and automatic ice makers take up too much room in the freezer. This unit made 2 pounds of ice in about a hour. Pretty cool. The cubes are really cup shaped and small enough to go through the hole of some 1 liter pop bottles like the Pepsi ones. The instructions of mine said to repeatedly press the power button for 5 seconds to enter into a self clean cycle. I actually had to press and hold the power button down for 5 seconds to enter the self clean cycle. That's the only hiccup I ran into.
We use our ice maker by the pool. It is very convenient and the kids love to watch the cubes being made. Comes in handy!
We can't say enough good things about our ice maker. It looks great, matches our kitchen nicely, and we all get a kick out of how fast it makes ice cubes. When the first load of ice was made, it was so fast we thought the sound of the ice hitting the tray was something we mistakenly heard. Its actually a fun appliance. We use it every time we have guest over, or when we go camping. Just plug it in, and pour in some water. A great product.
I purchased this on sale and it took some time for the cubes to start forming. I think I was impatient pressing the power button waiting and waiting. But finally I have ice! My employees are happy and my staff are happy so it's a win / win!
I just received this today. It is much louder than I expected during the making process. It is as loud if not louder than than a dishwasher. It only makes 8-9 barrels of ice at a time and I don't think it could keep up with a family's needs much less a gathering. At this rate it will need to run 24/7, just to have enough ice for a family of 5 at a meal. This is my 1st countertop ice maker so I have nothing to compare it too. I have called the customer service line, several times and left messages, the recording states they will call back the same business day, but so far, no return call from them. On a positive note.. it is well designed, looks good and is compact
