My old thermostat died as I could no longer set the temperature. Obviously a heat pump type because of the settings so I matched up the old to this one with the same settings available. My old one has 6 wires this new one has 9 connections available. I did my homework to find out having an AC place come out and replace would be well over $200. Yes they provide their own thermostat obviously jacked up the price 2X or 3X times plus install equals big bucks so why not try myself? The instructions even provide a listing for any possible non match labels which mine did. The only reason it took me a while is because my wires are very stiff and were hard to set into the very tiny screw holes that are lined up side by side very close together on this new one. Other than that it was easy. Just match up the connection labels from old thermostat to the new one. I thought if I couldn't do it and had to call some AC outfit at least I saved in the cost of the thermostat and would only have to pay for the install. Not mentioned is that you still need 2 AA batteries which I already had in my old one. I did it myself and saved money. It works fine.
My husband installed this without any issues. Easy install, we did learn that our old thermostat had some extra wires we did learn this happens sometimes .you will need two AA batteries. I didn't realize this but it's still a better digital upgrade then the older thermostats
Had some concerns as to whether it would work with my system after reading reviews. When it came in, I compared the wires on both the new and old. My Janitrol Heat Pump had 7 wires and instead of an Aux wire, it had one labeled W2. the new one had 9 wire connectors. Looking at the installation booklet it said call cooler/heat specialist if the letters didn't match. I did call to verify that it would work with my system. Tech support was very helpful and made sure he understood what I was asking. After talking to him, the entire installation took 20 min... one reason it took so long was that I decided to paint the area under the thermostat. It worked great! Loved the way the wires connect: instead of having to wrap them around the screw, they just slide straight down into the connectors and tighten screws. I love it and am glad I decided to go ahead and order it!
Very pleased at the quickness of shipping. Noticed the Honeywell thermostat had metal screws for connecting thermostat and not plastic as competitor. Called phone number that came with package on how to wire thermostat. Every thing was made easy and now have a working A.C. (Very pleased.)
Works exactly as described. Very easy to install. Simple and straight forward instructions. I was replacing a older Honeywell thermostat with mercury switches and this new one works flawless. Couldn't be happier
After years of fighting with old analog thermostats and having seen this model in use at my Elks Lodge, I decided to take the plunge. The instructions were simple yet sufficiently detailed for me to connect these to my Janitrol heat pump systems, one upstairs and one downstairs, in less than an hour. They work great, and there is no more guessing at where the temperature is set! I don't know what the 'Y' is at the beginning of the model number on the Walmart model, but when you receive the unit, it is a normal Honeywell RTH3100C.
I bought 3 t stats before this one. This one was the best and the easiest to install. Honeywell's customer service is just like everyone elses (terrible) cant understand a word they say.
I bought this thermostat because of the battery backup. Our old thermostat did not have a backup and the setting would not hold after a power outage. The instructions are fairly easy to understand, but the wiring may take some experimentation. Our 16 year old existing thermostat had a terminal labeled O/B, which was not covered in the new instructions. I put that wire in the O terminal of the new thermostat and the heat pump came on when the A/C should have. Switched it to the B terminal and the A/C works fine. Haven't used it in heat mode yet.
Purchased this thermostat which says "for use with heat pump systems only" but what it doesn't tell you is it doesn't work with single stage heat pump. Before buying this product look at your old thermostat...if it only has 4 wires, then this thermostat WILL NOT work on your heat pump system.
This is a proper thermostat for heat pumps - not all thermostats work right with heat pumps. Only problem so far with it is that the temperature display reads about 3-4 degrees too high, which according to tech support is within design tolerance.
