Ok first off its an ice cube people not a nugget of gold. Last I checked ice is free for the most part and already readily found in most homes. Its true it works best if you have VERY cold water but hot water from the tap will work to change the color and doesnt need to be dangerously hot to work. Personally I lay down a towel on the kitchen table, sacrifice some ice cubes and smile as he laughs and plays for the 30 minutes or so the ice cubes last. Then I just put in another one. Rather easy Id say for a toy that keeps him happy, creative and busy. We LOVE IT!
This a great buy. It's easy to play with, but you have to make sure it's icy water. the hot water has to be between 86 & 104 degrees. If this was the last toy on Earth you should buy this!
We just bought one of the color changing cars, not the whole set. We have to use ICE cold water and the ice had to practically touch the car to get it to change even then. I just wish they could have made it a little more sensitive. It's the same great hot wheels quality so at least we didn't get a bad product, but I wouldn't have spent the extra for the color changing one if I'd known.
After a week of hearing the kids complain that the cars don't change colors and that they were a waist of their hard earned money, I read a review that said you needed ice cold water and they were absolutely correct. You need to literally put ice in the water and then they work great. It shouldn't be that difficult to change the colors. Once the ice runs out you can't play with the cars.
