I've used both TurboTax and Tax Act software in the past. There's no comparison. TurboTax is so much better! They do a great job asking questions. Super easy and way deeper that the other software guys.
As another reviewer noted, you can NOT prepare a Schedule D (for any sale of mutual funds) with this version. Ridiculous! I verified this from Turbtax's website that this was by design and not an update issue. After many years of using Turbotax, it is time to move to another tax preparation software product.
I've used Turbo-Tax or Intuit's other Accounting Software products since the 80's, always the Deluxe version, always satisfied with results and functionality. NOT ANYMORE, and here's why: CONS Offshore service, Reduction in functionality (fewer schedules), Bait and switch marketing tactics (buy at the next level to receive the same as last year's level of functionality), corporate profit mongering, counter-intuitive marketing. . . PROS Still, in fairness, it continues a pretty design and possesses a fair depth of informational resource for very simple returns (of course, you don't need that for a very simple return). So I switched to H&R Block's matching product which automatically found all of last year's Turbo Tax data and imported it easily and thoroughly; then I completed my return in a simple-to-use and fairly intuitive q&a interface, all for $31, state and federal with a free federal filing. No brainer, easy-peasy! Thank you Intuit, for shining such a big bright light on the proficiencies of your competitors and your willingness to forfeit the loyalty of your patrons for a few lousy bucks. Next up: a trial of MoneyDance to see if it is a viable replacement for Intuit's Quicken Home and Business. After nearly 30 years of using Intuit (yes, I used quicken back in the days of MSDOS and 5.25 inch floppy disks), and 40 years writing software myself, I'm about to be Intuit Free.
To my surprise, after all of the years I have used TurboTax Deluxe to do my taxes, I find out that this year's Deluxe is not what Deluxe used to be. No Self employment support. No support for C, D, E and F forms. What a marketing screw up by Intuit. I just bought the software, never thought to read reviews or look at details. After all, I have used TurboTax Deluxe year after year to do my taxes. Now I have to buy another, more expensive edition. Fat chance!! You would think Intuit would publish a notice or notify all it's previous users before issuing such a change. But no, there is more profit in making repeat customers, loyal to the product, have to buy two different editions. Not Me. I am never going to use it again. If I have to buy another edition it will be an edition published by someone else.
I can't believe, after over 10 years of using Turbo Tax Deluxe, that Intuit has dropped support for stock, bond, mutual fund sales. No schedule D support, which forces an upgrade to a more expensive version of their software, Premiere. It's an unfortunate trend in business today, "Give you less, so they can charge you more". SAD!
Intuit took out all stock sale and any business income forms like Schedule C, D and K-1. It is no longer the same product that it used to be. Instead, they want you to buy the Premier edition to do the same things that you used to do with Deluxe. Use the H&R Block software instead which still includes all of the necessary forms to get your taxes done.
TT took out several schedules from the deluxe version. You now have to upgrade to do what you did last year costing you more money than last year. Going to get H&R block deluxe. It has the schedules and is cheaper. Bad move by TT. Buyer beware.
For those of you self-employed or needing to worry about self-employment tax ("minister of the gospel")... TT had been the go-to software for the past two decades or so. No longer. While no new packaging announces that TT Deluxe no longer does what it used to do, a pop-up will neatly alert you to the fact that you need to upgrade for another $30 to TT Premium. This prices TT considerably above their competitors for our rather modest income, and rather simple tax structure. Fortunately for us, we tend to do our taxes in January, so this presents us with ample opportunity to look for alternatives. But for a lot of people who tend to prepare in April, or for the unwary consumer, this might come closer to extortion. Oh, and you can add the (simple, singular, for us!) form to TT deluxe, but that voids their "maximum refund" guarantee AND renders you unable to efile. This ends almost 20 years happily just reordering TurboTax Deluxe every January. Good-bye, Turbo tax. We will be trying something else this year.
I have been using TurboTax basic for about 10 years now. My return is fairly complex. I file sched D,C. I have a lot of investment activity and a small business. This year all of the TurboTax data says that Basic is only for 1040EZ and to get to sched C, I have to buy the home business version for $100 plus. They have always tried to constantly upsell you all their higher packages, but this is the first time they have stated that their lower levels don't support sched D and C. Rather than risk buying something that can't use, I have purchased the H and R Block basic software this year. It will do everything I want. Sorry TT you have lost a long term customer. I would recommend that anyone who is competent doing your taxes switch to something else if you don't like paying for junk you don't need.
If you have sales of securities like stock, that requires a Sch. D which is no longer supported by the Deluxe version (new for tax year 2014). You have to buy the Premium version for $20 more. If you have business income (Sch. C), you'll have to pay even more for the Home & Business version. TaxAct offers all forms for less than $30. It can also read TurboTax files (from the PDF version). Definitely time to stop buying TurboTax.
