Beautiful clear view of the stars, however still learning to use it, not easy! Have to download instructions, etc. Well worth the purchase.
I really love this product for the performanc, value, and price.
works well with little know how. just assemble according to instructions, put in batteries, go to the desired target, hit enter, and youre looking at it. gps works very well and points right to the target.
The ioptron cube is worth the cost of this system. The optics are clear and the view is what we should expect to see. The finder scope supplied with the telescope was difficult to use, but a right angle finder scope cured that problem. If you add a heavy finder scope be sure to add some ballast to balance out the telescope. I was able to see the moons of Jupiter with this telescope from our back yard. An understanding of the exit pupil size should be investigated before buying anything less that an 10mm eyepiece. In my case 18mm is about the smallest due to the exit pupil size. This information is explained on several astronomy sites. An external battery is the only way ensure that you have enough power to last a viewing session. Any 12 volt battery and a power adapter with a (+) positive tip will work fine. The Stanley fat max tool box makes a great case for the ioptron telescope, use some foam cut to fit. The tripod supplied is a weak point in this system, one solution is to hang some weight on the hook to stabilize the system. Note that a standard camera mount is too small for the cube in case you want to use a heavier tripod. I took the mounting screw out of the supplied tripod and threaded it on the bottom to fit a standard heavy duty tripod. The instructions on the quick guide sheet and the instructions in the user manual will make alignment very easy, don't change the gps information including the date, and all will go well. Walmart has some small stick on levels in the motorhome section that come in handy. I used four of them (2packages). A note that I observed that will help more than anything else, the bubble level in the base of the cube should be ignored. Rely on the stick on levels aligned with a larger carpenters bubble level applied to the telescope assembly and the cube. The cube will find your target if it is leveled. I hope this helps you enjoy the system. Atuk PS: Sky and Telescope has excellent information on viewing.
I was amazed with this goto telescope at almost all the aspects. It is very easy to assemble and operate. The first evening was cloudy and almost impossible for any star alignment. I used a compass to line the south and did the leveling with the built in bulb. I randomly chose Jupiter and let the mount slewed from parking position. Did not anticipate anything, but it surprised to me a bright star was in the field of view of the 25 mm EP through the edge of clouds. Amazing, it was Jupiter! The built-in GPS is really convenient and very sensitive; it locked signal in house where my cell phone sometimes doesn't work. Overall, it is an excellent goto telescope for the money. I would certainly recommend it to potential buyers.
We gave this as a gift to our 21 year old son. He loves it! There are some inconsistencies when setting the compass settings. It seems to move just a little off where it should be. But it can be manually moved. It's not an expensive telescope so FOR THE PRICE it's pretty good.
There is one down side! The tripod that came with the telescope is a piece of junk!! It will hardly hold itself up let alone while holding a telescope!!
Please see my review of this unit under it's sister model (Ioptron SmartStar-N 114 Computer Telescope) whch is the non GPS version though I bought this GPS version and, other then that one catagory, both telescopes are the same Re. best operating setup and overcoming the photo tripod "shaking" issue. Othwerwise, a good value for the money considering the GPS model is onlly $20.00 or so more here at Walmart!
This was my first telescope and I guess my expectations were too high. It was very easy to set up and the controls were also easy to learn. The views of the moon were terrific and if that is what you are buying this to look at then I recommend it. The gps unit tracked right with the moon. I live in the suburbs of a city so it is not as dark outside as it could be for best viewing. The darker your surroundings the better. The goto function of the gps is supposed to take the telescope to the object. I found that in most cases, it got close but I had to adjust it manually to get it right on. My biggest gripe is with the tripod. I have read that walmart ioptron telescopes have a cheaper version of the tripod. Not sure if that is true but the tripod is light and not sturdy. There is a plastic hook under it to hang a weight. As you try to focus the telescope, just breathing seems to shake the image. The telescope worked better in my driveway on cement than in the yard on grass. We went to a dark field for viewing and after a few searches and the tripod moving, the gps became more and more not on target. If your expecting to see the rings of saturn, I can only tell you what I saw. I saw what looked like a white star with a line through it. I have since returned my telescope. On advice from a friend I have since purchased a pair of Zhumell 25x100 astronomy binoculars. For around the same cost, the views of the stars and planets are way better than this telescope. There isn't a gps unit but nothing a star chart can't find. And you get to learn your constelations. Hope this helps.
I bought lthis thinking it was going to be easy. Once you get it together you take it outside and you have to have a flashlight and 3 hands to get things going. I needed a leveler a compass which I dont have yet. Pointed it south to look at moon straight ahead of me and couldnt get into view. Spent have of battery life just trying to find it. Once I did find it it was really small. I could see more features on lthe moon with my eyes than with the telescope. Eye pieces are very small to look through and Im wondering if everybody else bought this to hook up to computer and get amazing pictures or what cuz I cant see anything yet. Dont know what Im doing wrong. Thats another thing they should have better troubleshooting.
