Nice and convenient

This is one of the easiest goto telescope systems I have ever seen. The setup is very straightforward with the photo instruction. Its compact size and GPS are good for those frequently travel to different places. It usually located the stars I was looking for in or near the center of the field of view. The tripod looks like for camera, but it is sturdy enough for the little scope. The optics is definitely beyond my expectation for the money.

Cute SmartStar

This little cute SmartStar computerized telescope is just what I have been looking for. Very suitable for grab n go. The pointing is much better than I expected; most of the time it locates the star at the center of the FOV. The accuracy of tracking is also very good, no less than those very expensive ones. It took me about 10 minutes to set the system up and go for observation with the photos of step by step quick start guide. The built-in GPS is really helpful in acquiring location and clock information.

Much Better than expected

The iOptron SmartStar-R80 GPS Computerized Telescope is everything the ads say about it, even more. The CUBE with GPS is the very best grab & go mount that one could start out with (for the price). Beginner or advanced, or for anyone that wants a very light and protable scope. The tracking ability is fanstatic. When the "align to target" feature is performed by you (the final tracking adjustment), it continues tracking right-on target for hours ongoing. The 80mm Refractor optics are superior to many other lowend telescopes. The images are sharp with the provided eyepieces. The focuser although plastic is smooth and tight for fine adjustment of the captured image. The hand controller is as advertised, very "Intuitive" and easy to master. So be sure to read directions for a successful first outing.

Great Value and Easy to Use!

3 things has impressed me about this telescope. 1. the price. For a 80mm refractor with all the fancy computer stuff and a GPS, $298 is truly a great deal. 2. Easy to set up and easy to learn. Assembly was pretty straight forward. The learning of iOptron's GoTo controller was also easy with the short Quick Setup Guide. 3. Accurate GoTo and nice optics. By doing Park, Slew and Sync, i did not even have to do any alignment, so in reality anyone can find stars with this telescope even if he/she does not know to how to read a star map!

We bought this telescope for our daughters 9th birthday. We really had no knowledge of telescopes, other than the basics from our grandfather. We had been looking for a good month before we came upon this one. The reviews were so impressive - even by those with quite extensive expertise - that we figured we'd give it a try. Well, she loves it. It's basic enough not to overwhelm her, but really has all the bells and whistles. We did, however, take the reviewers suggestions and buy a separate tripod. The one that comes with the telescope isn't very solid.

I bought one and thought it was so good, I purchased another. I have 15 years of astronomy under my belt and through those years have accumulated a "fair number" of telescopes in my collection. Two Celestron 6 inch refractors (a CR150HD and a C6R), 3 Maksutov's (two 6 inch and a 5 inch), two 120 achros and let's say a few other scopes. However, I only use the cube in this set with the refractor supplied in this package. If you've read the reviews here and at other sites on this product the cube mount reviews are very favorable. The go-to cube works FANTASTIC. It is very easy to set up and tracks VERY well. The only downfall is the tripod. WalMart is selling a set with the smaller tripod. That accounts for the lower price they sell it at when compared to other retailers. Everything else is the same. There is a hook on the lower part of the tripod in this package. If you tie it or weigh it down there will be less vibrations (dampening). As for the R80 80mm refractor that was part of this set, part of my "collection" of scopes includes scopes several F5 80mm Short Tubes sold by Celestron, Orion, Stellarvue and Apogee and the highly taunted Bosma 80mm Astronomics recently sold. The optics on these are pretty good but they do show the dreaded purple/green yellow fringe/halo around brighter objects as one would expect. I can take these up to about 160-170 times in magnification before the images begin to washout. The F5 short tubes I own were tuned-up by me (flocked, flat black paint, lens edges blackened, etc to take that magnification) using Bob Berta's instructions available on the web. Right out of the box the iOptron Short Tube 80 astounded me. Perfect star tests. No color fringing around Jupiter or the limbs of the moon. Vega displays a slight hint of a violet color but in the star itself. The website for iOptron states they use a fluorite in the 80mm short tube and I believe they do. I can magnify Jupiter up to about 200x in this scope and it is a VERY good image. Banding is evident. I've had the moon magnified up to 250x and it too, is still a good image. The only negative thing I can say about this Optron scope (80mm short tube) is the entire focuser assembly is made out of plastic. However, it is perfectly functional. There is no slippage and focusing is smooth. All other parts of the scope are made of metal. Furthermore, the optical coatings on the scope are VERY good. From my experience with these I can say I am VERY satisfied with this WalMart special. If only one of the two I purchased had superior optics I would not be so sure. However, both of the iOptron R80 refractors blew the "name brand" short tubes out of the water. I believe this refractor cube combo is a FANTASTIC bargain for both experienced and non-experienced astronomers and highly recommend it to all. You've got a winner here iOptron! Great Product!! Thank you iOptron and Walmart!

As soon as I figured out how to work it, it has been great. I still haven't used it that much because we have had some cloudy and cold weather. I don't go out in the cold. As soon as the weather gets better I will be out there looking around. I am looking forward to it.

Did a full study before finally buy one from Walmart for saving more than $100. As I expected, the tripod is not as stable as it should be but I have a heavy duty tripod at home. The unit is perfect for grab-n-go and visual use. The optics is good enough for both planet observing and bird watching. Setup is easy and GOTo and tracking is good. However, the bubble level is not accuracy.

No USB PORT, Shaky Tripod

If your a comparative shopper you need to read this. This scope uses the bottom of the line components available from IOPTRON. First it uses the 8405 controller not the 8402. The 8402 has a usb port. The 8402 is firmware up gradable and more importantly can be remote controlled by a computer. The included 8405 controller is a water downed version and sells for $100 less than the 8402 controller. Second is the tripod. Normally a stainless steel tripod is included with this scope. The Walmart version is a lightweight aluminum. Even this tiny scope shakes alot with the supplied tripod. The telescope dealers on the net sell this scope for $339 with the SS tripod and 8402 controller. Walmart is $229 with the 8405 controller and aluminum tripod. Once passed this the scope and goto mount perform well. The bands on Jupiter were clearly visible last night. The accuracy of the star finder is very good. However the accuracy is highly dependent on getting the scope really level. Time spent leveling will payoff with much greater accuracy. If you dont need a USB port I give it 4 out of 5. In the end you do get what you pay for from Walmart.
