Great Sharpening Whetstone

I know this isn't the absolute best on the market, but it compares very close to others in its grain category. 400/1000. I was able to use this and my strop at home to sharpen our Japanese steel sushi grade knives, as well as every pocket knife I've got. Still incredibly sharp weeks later.

Nice and squared with no clips or dings. I've sharpened a bunch of knives and even an ax on it. Works well and I'll still get a lot more use out of this one. It hasn't showed much

Great Stone - fine side of stone worked great

This was a great stone for the price. There are finer stones that will cost more, but for my first water stone this one worked great. The fine side is 1000 grit and that seemed to do the job to produce a great fine edge on my knife. Later I would look to get a finer stone for more money, but for now this one will do the job.

It arrived the day it was estimated which is pretty good. I also assumed it would be smaller than it was. However, it is a pretty good size. I think I would be able to use it on a few kitchen knives. The only issue I had was when it arrived, there were some chips on the coarse side of the stone. I don't think that would hinder it's ability to sharpen knives but was a slight disappointment.

Ive never used a whetstone before, but its not hard to sharpen knives, all it takes is patience and the right angle and I got the hang of it after a while on my kitchen knives. The main things is to get a burr after a few swipes and then do the other side so you can get a sharp edge.

first time buying a sharping stone. i bought this because i wanted to sharpen kitchen knives. you have to practice to get good at it, use a knife you don't care about because you might mess it up. there is some conflicting instructions online on how to use, water or no water. read as much as you can about using stones and practice, practice , practice. look up videos on youtube and internet. i had fun using it, BUY IF YOU WANT TO LEARN here is some stuff i found, they all sound like professionals http://video.about.com/culinaryarts/Sharpen-Knives-With-a-Whetston.htm?rd=1 http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/knivescutlery/ht/whetstone.htm this is a video that says don't use water http://video.about.com/culinaryarts/Sharpen-Knives-With-a-Whetston.htm?rd=1 this is a youtube video that i watched that uses water. *informative http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFIg9Cm-nJg

This is a good size stone and has the two different grits needed for knife sharpening. No instructions were included, but there are many websites with written and video instructions, so this is not an issue for most people. A fair amount of dust is generated during the sharpening process, so protect the work surface and wash the knife after sharpening is completed.
