I read review on this product before I bought it. The reviews are mixed. But if you read them carefully, the negative reviews tend to be either it is broken right away, or not doing the job it is not designed to do. My thought is that since Walmart has 90 day return policy, I am not afraid if it breaks right away. As for not doing a good job review, I decided to test it out myself. First of all, I set my expectation straight. This is designed to chip small branches up to 1.5 in. It is not designed to shred leaves. If you keep this expectation in mind, you won't be disappointed. So far I only used it for two days. I liked it so far. It is light -- I can easily move it around. It is small, I can easily fit it in the areas that I need mulch. It is easy to operate -- just turn the switch on and off. It is quiet compared to more powerful gas powered chippers. I live in a quiet neighborhood, so being quiet is important to me. But most important, it is safe to operate since it is not so powerful that scares. In fact, I checked out a larger Troybilt gas chipper befpre, it is so loud that I was afraid to lose my hearing. It also made me feel unsafe to operate. I read that it works better for freshly cut woods than dry woods. My experience is that it cut dry wood just fine. But I avoided chipping 1.5 in dry sticks so far. I did use it to chip fresh branches up to 1.5 in. It worked fine. It did get stuck a couple of times. I just had to turn off the motor and pull up the sticks and try again. Although it says it won't shred leaves, I feed the fresh cut branches full of leaves through, it chipped the branches, and shred the leaves to pieces without a problem. The leaves are not shredded to fine pieces, but small enough to me. It is easy to clean -- just open the top part and tip the body to its side to dump the shredded woods/leaves, you are done. To me, this is a good fit. I only need it to chip away the small branches. For larger branches, they can be either used as fire woods, or dumped in the transfer station in town -- they are very easy to put in the trunk as long as you cut them to short pieces. The small branches full of leaves are the ones that are hard to transport in a sedan. Basically, if you have a small yard with some trees and bushes that you want to keep them from out grown, this is perfect. If you have a large land with a forest to chip, this is not the right one.
Easy to assemble and use!! Handles small thick branches. You will have to open it up to clean it out if you're doing alot of cleaning; but that's easy to do!! Mulch size is kind of pebble- like vs a small chip size. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this little machine! Great price too!! I think it's kinda fun too! It chomps pretty fast to!!
Great shredder. Feed it slowly and avoid double knots in branches that are over 3/4" thick. Overall powerful machine. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
This little chipper can handle a massive amount of material and chips down branches to small chips. Although the feeding is a little slow, it handled 1-1/2" branches easily and the associated DRY leaves and shoots. Leaves pass through a little coarse, but it does reduce your yard waste volume significantly (and I suspect far more than than ratio suggested by the manufacturer). I am chipping English Beech which is a very, very hardwood with no issues. Platform is very stable under load. A very good purchase and an excellent mulched product.
For the price it works well. It is important to know its limitations though. Branches/twigs/leaves should be DRY or the will gradually plug up the discharge chute. Not a big deal to clean them out and, all in all - a typical 1 Hr. job of reducing yard scrap to waste bin size was done in about 10 Min. Assembly was a snap and took only a few minutes. Machine is light enough to move around with little effort. I expected an extra blade in the box based on the description but it only comes with the single reversible blade attached. No big deal. I have a grinder to sharpen when necessary. Design and maintenance is straightforward and easy to do. Well built, well designed and affordably priced.
Overall quite good: could use a quick-opening latch rather than a screw knob to access the cutting blade. Jams take too long to clear. A stronger motor would also be great. The cutting blade has 2 cutting edges to extend its life. Great feature.
Slot for brush entry is quite narrow. Bushy plants have to be crushed before they can be shredded. The machine had to be opened after every few bushes to clear refuse which would not fall through automatically.
I'm an old lady, even I was able to assemble the unit quickly without waiting for my husband's help. I used it to chop tons of dead flowers & vegetables I had, no big hard branches. It was very light weight, not noisy, just the right power for my purpose. Very happy that I'll be able to have good compost with this chopper. However, the motor simply wouldn't start after about 2 hours of total use. Try everything, reset button, open up & carefully clear all stuff out, check power, push in all connections ---etc. At the end, called the manufacturer, talked to a nice lady who said they can definitely take it back, but would be easier for me if I just return it to Walmart store since I only had it for a week. Walmart took my return (all dirty after 2 hours use) with no question asked. I'm ready to order another one, wish me luck!
After reading mixed reviews I chose to purchase this item. Unfortunately even with the specified diameter this machine does not make for quick work. A narrow entrance means you can't fit oddly shaped sticks.
I had to return this product. It is not a chipper shredder. It is only a chipper. It will not take leaves or green vegitation. The name is misleading.
