We got this telescope for our family for Christmas. We are having a little trouble finding stuff but we are learning. The telescope is sturdy, stable and easy to use. The software that is included however is not easy to use. I felt like I needed to be a scientist to understand. This is a great tool for family learning!
My family love this telescope. The day we receive, we were able to explore moon. I saw just picture of it but now I can see how actually moon looks in detail. I hope my pleasant journey will continue for other planets... Good: - Price (around 150) - Easy setup (in 30 minutes) - Great view - practically zero learning curve - Stable tripod Bad:) - Cheap plastic material for few peaces
This is the largest refractor that can be bought at a reasonable price, and Wal-Mart has really made this the best value in the marketplace. Here's why-the supplied eyepieces (EP's) are Series 4000 Super Plossl 9.7mm & 26mm, each valued on 'sale' at $40.00 + shipping! That alone, changes the playing field vs. all other resellers, as everyone else is offering MA9mm & MA25mm EP's ($9.00 all day long!). Optics: The Objective Lens is outstanding, and Meade is known for it's excellent optics. The 'star' diagonal provided is plastic, and will break quickly, however, Meade has been replacing these under warranty with all metal diagonals- which are better, stronger & offer higher light reflectivity to boot! The EP's provided are very, very good and are used by people who have much better equipment all day long. OTA/Mount/Tripod: Great 'overall' package, with a few limitations. The 'locking sleeve' on the OTA is a weak link, and can be replaced with a dove tail assembly (two rings attached to a sturdier adjustable bar). Understand that 'balancing' the Otpical Tube Assembly (OTA) os critical when viewing for balancing it, and allowing the slow motion adjustment knobs to work well. The Alt./Az. mount is 'enough', but balancing does really help. The Tripod is aluminium, is very lightweight and is great for 'Grab & Go' purposes. But, it's lighter than the OTA/mount, so vibration becomes an issue. Meade/Celestron/Orion offer vibration dampening foot pads for $40.00, or, you can attach a $0.50 cent bungee cord below the accessory tray and attach it to any weigh: Power Tank, 1 gallon water bottle, a rock, a dumbbell-whatever for a 'taut' line-which will even out the top heaviness & reduce vibration faster. Must have's: Image Erecting Prism to make images up-side-up & correct left to right. It also makes 'tracking' terrestrial objects & stars/moon/planets more intuitive. 2x or 3x Barlow-Doubles EP usage magnification-like doubling you EP set! A 32mm or 40mm Plossl (or Super Plossl) eyepiece which is very good for finding objects and 'seeing' wider fields of view-although it's a lower magnification-it;s very usaful all of the time! So, it's has excellent optics, the slow motion controls are close at hand (very important!) and work very well, and the increased 'viewing' capacity is invaluable to the beginner or intermediate user. 70mm diameter= 6.2" surface area, 90mm diamter=9.62" surface area 30% more light gathering- a big increase for better details! The competitor telescopes on alt/az mounts 'seem' to be almost $50 to $60.00 more expensive, on sale-so, I think this is the best value available by far! Clear Skies! Dave
I have always wanted to learn more about stars, planets, and moon......this telescope has helped me learn more than I ever did before. The telescope is great to use and sharing it with your family. The DVD gave a great information.
I got this telescope for my husband for his birthday and he is thrilled with it. We can see the craters on the moon so clearly. We haven't learned where to find Saturn and Jupiter yet and it has been cloudy most evenings so we haven't really tried yet. I was thrilled when I looked through the lens and so how clearly you could see the surface of the moon. My husband is going to start charting the moon so we can see how the planet and the moon move. I would recommend this product to any star or moon gazer. I purchased this one because for a little extra money you get to see Jupiter and the lower cost ones only allow you to see the Moon and Saturn so it was only about $40 more. We'll update the review once we search for the other planets and let you know how we make out.
My daughter got it for her 11th birthday, and I think that her Dad likes it just as much. They absolutely love it. A few nights ago, they found Saturn with it. This is an EXCELLENT telescope. Thank you it is AWESOME.
I love this telescope but when i first recieved it in the mail it was broken i was very upset. I called Meade and they shipped me a new one right away after i paid shipping to return the broken one. If you are a first time user this is perfect dont settle for a cheap one you can really see the moon in all its glory and the stars. Great product!!
I was hesitant to buy a "department store" telescope that we are so often warned about - not sure what I would be getting. After 2 weeks and approximately 15 hours observing, I can definitely recommend this telescope for someone getting started in astronomy. Specific comments: -Very clear optics; Saturn (currently up most of the night in the south) is crystal clear even in the low power eyepiece (36X); in the higher power eyepiece (100X) it looks just like you imagined it would - could make out different colors on the surface, the rings looked 3D, and Saturn's largest moon Titan was visible as a bright dot nearby. I was also able to see M13 (The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules - over 25,000 light years away) as a bright 'smudge' very clearly. The optics on this telescope were good enough to split some difficult double stars (like the famous "Double Double" in Lyra). A word of warning, however - you can't expect too much from a telescope of this size. So Saturn will look really clear (and will take your breath away the first time you see it!) - it's still going to be relatively small in the eyepiece. 90mm is a pretty big beginner refractor scope - but it's not the Hubble (or a 8 inch $400 telescope, for that matter). -The mount is overall steady; a little shaky at high magnification, but damps down within 5 secs or so. Mounts tend to be the weak point in beginner 'scopes - this one has some nice features not found in cheaper scopes - it's very easy to adjust with the adjustment knobs. Overall, no complaints for the money. -Red dot finder - once you get it aligned (took me about 4 minutes), makes finding bright objects in the sky very easy. I usually realign in quickly before beginning observing (before it's too dark). -Eyepieces - nice overall. The 25mm gives you 36X, while the 9mm gives 100X. You'll probably spend more time at 36X - no complaints at all. Overall - are there better telescopes out there? Of course. And a lot of them cost a lot more money. For the money, you get a solid beginner scope that will allow you to see the planets and some deep sky objects (like star clusters and the Andromeda Galaxy), and of course the moon; good optics and decent eyepieces. And you'll be a lot happier with this scope than with a $30 60mm scope (although those are great for kids or people that just want to see the moon, etc). A lot of "serious" amateur astronomers with 10 inch or bigger scopes keep a 90mm (3.5 inches) around for a 'grab and go'. You'll be amazed what you can see with it.
This is my first telescope. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I figured if people will pay thousands of dollars for a top of the line telescope, and I was paying a fraction of that, I would get a fraction (or less) of the performance. That said, I am more than pleased with this scopes construction and performance. Aluminum tube, clear optics, red dot finderscope that actually works and slow motion adjustment knobs. Some areas where Meade saved costs are the eyepieces, diagonal and mount. All work but aren't great quality. The eypieces are acceptable but somewhat grainy. The diagonal is made of plastic but the mirror is clear. The mount is light for this scope but will hold an image steady. At this point this telescope far exceeds my ability to use it so I am very happy. I'm sure I will outgrow it quickly as my skill improves but that's what starter scopes are for right. I suggest buying a better set of eyepieces at the same time you order the scope. They will improve your viewing and will fit your next scope if you upgrade later. I bought the Meade 4000 kit that cost more than the scope but made all the difference.
Good telescope for beginners, although tripod and mount are a little light weight. Any movement on the controls causes considerable jitter. Next time I'll spend a little extra and buy one with tracking capabilities, it is surprising has fast the earth rotates causing you to continuously adjust the controls and jitters. Great moon views, kids love it.
