Got this for my 5 yr old. He loves it. Easy to use. Took a little time to figure it out, but very awesome.
This was my starter scope. Was on clearance for 39.99. The first thing a newbie should do is gander Pleiades. Then I was able to see the moons of Jupiter. Little tiny dots. Great first scope. The one that really hooked me was Saturn. A hair fuzzy but with this scope you can make out the rings. None the less this scope will teach you the basics and a hair more. Seems we all have a fond memory of this scope.
This telescope is really easy to use and assemble. The two lens that comes with it (One for sight seeing, and one space observations ) works really well. The images that it displays are very clear. The tripod is a little stable, but it moves a little when your trying to turn the telescope. I kinda wished that they would send me a black version of this instead of a gray looking one (makes it look its a kiddy's scope). Overall I highly recommend this product to beginners or people who likes sightseeing.
With a pending lunar eclipse and my husbands new astronomical interest, I stopped by the local WalMart to purchase a telescope for beginners. I was amazingly surprised to see the last two left over from Christmas on clearance for $21.00!!!!! We watched the eclipse with great clarity and hope to see much much more in the heavens. Thanks WalMart! Great scope at a great, great price.
I purchased this low end telescope, not for star gazing, but as a spotting scope. I can clearly see the bullet holes in the target at 100 yards with no problem. I have looked at the moon with this telescope, and it really makes it look close. The detail is amazing!
Purchased "this" telescope for our 8 year old grandsons birthday. I did a lot of checking on the web and found Walmarts selection very good. I purchased the Meade RB-60 because of the good price and especially because there were great product reviews. The product is very impressive for a beginning "star gazer" and our grandson is having such fun with his gift.
I purchased this scope for $21. It was the best $21 I remember spending. We watched the total lunar eclipse as well as many other wonderful sites in the heavenlies. It is well made and well worth every penny. It really shows great detail of the moon too! I wish I would have purchased several.
This was purchased as a gift for my 8 year old son and it does very well. It comes with three different lens pieces, a 25mm lens, a 9mm lens and a x2 converter. We have developed a system in which we use the 25mm to find the object we want to look at, put it in the center of the view, add the x2 converter, move the object back to the center, and then change the 25mm to the 9mm for the closest possible view. It works well for us. We have had it only since the summer months, so we have spent most of our time looking at the Moon and Jupiter and four of it's moons. Jupiter, through this telescope, is about the size of a thumbnail and you can see the two bands of storms (stripes) going across the center of the planet. My only complaint is that not on the tripod, but also the focus mechanism are loose and you really have to be careful about even breathing on the scope to keep things in focus or centered. It is afterall and very inexpensive beginner scope, so I don't expect much more than that. We have had many hours of fun with this scope and I'm sure once fall and winter arrive and the object in the sky change we will have many more hours of fun with it!
First off let me say that usually in astronomy aperture rules. The bigger the glass the greater the light gathering ability of the scope. That being said 60mm is the lowest readily available starter scope. It is a good size to test the waters and see if the person you are buying it for truly has an interest that will grow without spending a lot of money. I have owned a Meade 60mm scope before and can say that the new improvements add much to the scope. The tripod has been improved greatly and is more steady then previous versions. The controls are also easier to use and won't hurt your fingers in cold weather. The old finder has been replaced by a red dot finder which is very nice for an entry level scope. The views are typical for a scope of this aperture, the moon is an easy and enjoyable target as well as some bigger and brighter deep sky objects. Saturn and it's rings are viewable as was Mars. Comet Holmes was viewable as well. All in all a breeze to set up and use. The improvements made by Meade make this a much more enjoyable and usable scope and one million times better than the older versions.
The product description advertises that you can see the rings of saturn. We have had difficulty see only stars much less planets. We are waiting for a clear night during the right cycle to see the moon. We bought this for a 10-yr old as a beginner's gift and wish we had spent a little more for a more powerful scope.
