The best Xbox yet!

My old Xbox died after 3 years or so and needed a replacement. Swapped out my old hard drive and put it in this Xbox and what a difference. It's quieter and boots up twice as fast. Plus it has 512MB of internal memory and is the latest "Jasper" model. This is the one you want, don't buy any of the older bundles as this model is only a few months old. Any bundle with free games are most likely not a "Jasper" so don't bother. This comes with no games but if you want the arcade disk, you can most likely pick this up for $5 or so.

He is correct about everything except the part about the Arcade version. The Arcade version is not the only version to come with the new "Jasper" chipset. Check on the power rating of the console and look for "12,1A". If you see that, then you are purchasing the console with the "Jasper" chipset!

"Jasper" Chipset

I finally decided to breakdown and buy a 360 with the newest motherboard. My "Falcon" is still running strong but is starting to show signs of fatigue. I'll keep the it in the bedroom and for system linking. Now, onto the "Jasper" (12,1A Manufactured 07/09). I must say that right out of the box I could see one major difference. The power brick for the "Jasper" is significantly smaller than the previous generations. Guess it makes sense at 150W as compared to 175W or 203W. The system runs quiet and it seems to run a lot cooler (I burn whatever games I'm playing onto my HDD though, so I'm sure that plays a part.) Hooking up was a breeze, also. The easiest experience I've had with anything xbox 360 related. (Don't get me started on the initial wireless hookup... Apple Base Station + Xbox 360= Nightmare) Anyway I plugged in my HDD and Wireless N router, turned on the unit, installed some updates and it found my wireless connection right out of the door. The jury is still out on whether the "Jasper" motherboards will have similar issues as previous generations (RROD) but... considering I've yet to have issues with my "Falcon" I'm convinced I'll be playing my newest 360 for years to come. Dell was definitely the way to go with this, too. 159.99 and awesome shipping speeds, you just can't beat it. So, if you're thinking about getting a 360 and aren't sure whether or not you'll get a "Jasper" from Dell, it appears chances are pretty good that you will. Make sure to check for the current rating on the 12 V rail. Find the opening on the box and look for the 12,1A rating before breaking the seal and opening it up.

Perfect Starter System

Even as a Halo fan (on PC), I'd been holding out on getting an Xbox 360 due to cost, unreliability (e.g., RROD), plus, already owning a Wii I thought was enough to satisfy my gaming needs. Due to the number of games coming out in 2009-10 and the upcoming release of Project Natal, I finally had to get one. I wasn't ready to spring for a $400 Elite system, but I wasn't sure if the 60GB HDD with the Pro system would be adequate for all the media and game updates/add-ons that are available now. So, I bought this Arcade as a starter to dip my toes in the true next generation waters; now I can just upgrade at my leisure with either 60GB or 120GB. I will *definitely* be getting an HDD at some point, but if all you want to do is play regular 360 games, despite the rumors this version is "broken", the HDD is NOT required to play the disc-based content of any 360 game. Simply put: buy an Arcade, buy a game, and you're set. You'll definitely run into walls of "HDD's only beyond this point", especially with large game add-ons, but it's not the system-disabling feature some try to make it out to be. I was pleasantly surprised that the system I received was not the system featured in the current description of this item (as of 06/24/2009): The current description lists that is comes with a 256MB memory unit and a pack-in of some Live Arcade games. What I received was a system with no pack-in, but 512MB of internal storage (even the 360 packaging itself still said 256MB storage). Which means that it's the latest "Jasper" model that runs cooler and quieter, and thus, less prone to the dreaded RROD that plagued previous models (one of my biggest concerns). The graphics are spectacular and the game library available is nothing short of phenomenal. But where the 360 surprisingly shined for me, was all the non-gaming options available: Downloads of shows and movies, some even free (even with only 512MB of storage I was able to download a handful of episodes of The Guild), streaming Netflix allows me to finally use the service from my couch, and streaming my personal PC collection of media to my TV and sound system is incredibly convenient. One night with this system was enough to make me realize that even with all the issues it's had, Microsoft did make one fine console. I still love my Wii, but the Xbox 360 is where it's at for an all-encompassing media experience, and the Arcade provides a relatively low-cost solution to get started.

Good product. But what about memory card and DVD?

System was amazing. I got it delivered in 2 days. Amazing service. But, I dont understand why they didn't give memory card and arcade game DVD. Isn't it supposed to be given FREE with the console by Microsoft? Very happy to see a Jasper chipset (Ther power adapter says 150W. Thats how you figure it out). Has some 256MB on-board flash memory. Super cool machine (no heating) and very quiter compared to pro's with Falcon chipset.

It was easy to order the product and I was able to apply two coupons onto my order. Seemless website for easy ordering. The product arrived on time and was undamaged. This arcade comes with INTERNAL memory attached my hard drive and DONT FORGET to register the xbox on xbox.com. You will also have to redownload anything you have downloaded in the past. This will make sure there are no problems when you replay Halo 3. You can also buy the bigger harddrives and attach them to the arcade. So go buy that 120gb hard drive and pop it on the new arcade you just bought.

Service from Dell was great. I received delivery on my Xbox in two days! My only qualm is the fact that the Tech Specs don't list the HDMI outpu. I chatted online with a service rep to confirm that it was present on this model only to be told it was NOT. Dell has since added the HDMI info to the Overview section but the Tech Specs tab (where most tech-savvy people would look) is still incorrect. For the record, there's no external memory unit (still listed in the Tech Specs as well) and there IS an HDMI out on this model. This version of the Arcade model remains your best bet for avoiding RROD issues.

things to think about before buying a system

Before buying anything you should educate yourself on the product, but lots of people dont and this is why i am giving a review. The Elite has had issues with not working, the arcade and pro system are known for being more reliable but still able to upgrade. But i would like to say if your gonna buy a system i would go with the PS3, unless the 360 has the games you want that are not on PS3. Here is my break down on the value of 360 vs. PS3..... 360 - $200..................PS3.120GB - $300 Batteries- $20 roughly.........Batteries - $0 Headset - $15....................Any bluetooth - $20 xbox live- $40....................online play - $ free wireless adapter - $77..........wireless ready $free 20GB HD - $40 ............................ $392 before tax ......................$320 before tax this is based on what you need in the first year of owning both systems to go online and play pretty much. i own both systems and i can say PS3 is far superior. Not too mention, the 360 is verrrrrry loud while operating , compared to pretty much no noise from the ps3 You can also upgrade a ps3 hard drive with any 2.5" notebook hard drive....meaning up to 500GB of space for only $90!!!!!! But the choice is yours
