Core system

I bought the core system since it was cheaper then the other packages. I personally have never regretted buying the basic package except that the basic package does not come with a memory card or harddrive. The hard drive itself costs about 150-180 depending on where you look. Personally your better off looking for the packages that comes with the wireless controller and the hard drive, and it does save you money. I am overall impressed with with the product and i still use it everyday without any problems. I highly recommend you this system if you already have a memory device, or your looking for something nice for the holidays where you dont have to spend extra money on(well besides the game and the memory device, but hey if someone can get a game, and someone else can get the harddrive, its cheaper for everyone) so in a couple of words: BUY IT

BUDGET EXCELLENCE

First off. This is the exact same xbox unit as the Elite and Pro console, just without and hard drive, and only standard definition cables. The new ones MAY even have an HDMI port. The console is fully capable of HD. You just have to purchase the component hd cables seperately (which are available on this site). In order to play on xbox live with this xbox, you need to purchase a hard drive or a memory card seperately. `This console only comes with a wired controller, but you can upgrade to wireless no prob. Supposedly all the new xboxes are now using a smaller, cooler running 65nm chip that reduces the noise of your xbox as well. In the long run, it is definitely more cost efficient to buy the pro console, due to hd cables and a hard drive costing you an extra $130 easy, but if you're on a budget, this bad boy gets the job done!

I see the PS3 and nintendo fans are keeping the Xbox 360 hate alive and well! 1 This core unit will do everything the pro and elite units will do. The Core console DOES NOT have a HDMI connection. It does support HDTV thru componet connections that must be purchased seperatly. The Core comes with standaard RCA video/audio inputs, Yellow Video, Red/White Left Right audio. 2 This is the way to go for someone on a budget or who simply does not want to throw 400 or 500 hundred dollars down up front for a Xbox 360 system. 3 With the Authentic product created by Xbox seal HDTV connection, the Core console will put out HDTV signal buy placing the slide to where it says HD. On a 42 inch plasma mine connects at 1080i for games and 720p for DVD. 4 You do not need the hard drive or memory units to play games on the core console. You will need them to connect to xbox live or to save your game plays. 5 All Xbox consoles support wireless controllers. If you want to go wireless with the Core console simply buy a authentic Microsoft Xbox wireless controller and your wireless! 6 All Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles come with a three year warranty. If it breaks they will replace it with in the three year period. The turn around is usually two to three weeks. 7 Do not buy anything for the Console that does not have a seal that plainly states Created By Xbox Microsoft Authentic Product. No matter the price or what it is. 8 Buying either the 64MB or the 512MB memory unit is not a waste of time or money, even if you plan on buying a 20 or 120 GB Hard Drive down the road. The console will use both the memory unit(s) and the Hard Drive to maximize your game play and Xbox Live experience. Xbox recommends that at least the 64MB memory unit be used along with a 20 or 120 GB Hard Drive. 9 I play my Xbox 360 Core console daily for over a year and have had no problems with it over heating or anything else. Make sure it is kept in a well ventilated area. Do not place it on the carpet. Do not put it inside the entertainment cabniet. Do not Put anything on top of it. Do not Put it ontop of anything that generates heat, AKA Cable/Satellite reciever, VCR, DVD Player, etc. Follow the instructions in the enclosed manual and it will provide many fun hours of game play. I have the 20GB Hard Drive, after a year or more 5GB is still available. Four wireless controllers, Four wireless head sets, HDTV connections, HD-DVD player, Wireless network adapter, Xbox Live. And i started with the Core Console!

Let me start by saying that I am no fanboy by anymeans and I do own all three of the newest consoles (360, Wii, PS3). That being said, the best games up to this point have been on the 360 and are a blast to play and XBOX live is unmatched to this point. The Wii is geared more towards the kids and those who don't play games regularly, while the PS3 and 360 are for the hardcore fans and those who enjoy mutimedia hubs and such. The major problem with the 360 is that the hardware is faulty, I have had to send mine in for repair twice now and the problem still doesn't seem to be going away. There is a 3 year warranty and that's good but be prepared to be without your console for a few weeks for repair. An item that costs this type of money should not have a 33% hardware failure rate. I believe that the newest models scheduled to be coming out in the next few months may fare better but you may want to atleast consider one of the alternatives. The Wii is cheaper @ $250 and everyone can enjoy, and the PS3 while heftier in price @ $499 has a growing library and big plans in store for the coming months and has a much much lower problem rate. After taking all this into consideration, I would still buy a 360 but I'd wait until the bugs are fixed... which should hopefully start happening by the time we enter into the Christmas season.

Not Bad, But Not What I Wanted

The only reason I chose not to recommend the core system is because we have an HDTV at home. The core system is not in HD. Nor does it allow you to use wireless controllers or play XBox Live. The system was great other than that. I found it difficult to compare the Core vs the Others so I figured I would buy the cheaper version. I found out why it was cheaper. If you want the HD, the wireless, the live you have to buy these adaptors. Save your time and buy the one that is $100 more. We upgraded the next day with no hassle at all. I will mention though don't open the box if you plan on returning/exchanging it or you'll have to wait while they file a claim.

I purchased the core system and I found it to run hot to the touch. I returned it and purchased the xbox360 arcade version which was the same price but came with a memory card and a wireless controller, and 5 arcade games. I played with it and found it to be cool to the touch unlike the core system. I highly recommend the xbox360 arcade version over the core system.

The games are great however the hardware not so much. The disk drive on my unit made a very high pitched squeal when idling with a disk in the drive. It sometimes still does it but for the most part that annoyance has gone away. Louder than loud. You would think with fans that loud they would be more than adequate to keep the 360 cool, but no, you need to get the Nyko intercooler just to keep the Xbox 360 going. Otherwise you'll end up with the dreaded RRoD after about 6 weeks. And no this is NOT a launch unit. Overall the product makes you feel like it is going to break at any moment. But like I said the games make up for it's shortcomings.
