As far as I can remember, this is the first "store bought" apple butter I have ever eaten. It was great . All my life I have love apple butter on French toast and crapes. As a young boy my mother made apple butter from fresh apples and for over 50 years my wife has made it. I have to say this was the best I ever had. It had a crisp sweet taste with a trace of tartness. Musselman's Apple butter was very creamy and smooth in texture.( I hope my wife doesn't read this.) Another great idea is to chop up a few walnuts and mix them with the Musselman's Apple butter and use as a topping on cup cakes. It was wonderful. I will be buying Musselman's Apple Butter from now on and will be telling my friends and family about it as well.
This is one of the best tasting apple butter spreads I've ever eaten. I even went to a place in Oregon that claimed they had "The Best Apple Butter in The World". I paid an outrageous amount for a jar, and it didn't even come close to this amazing flavor and texture. I was disappointed, and couldn’t help but wondering whatever happened to ‘truth in advertising’. Well, someone else must have felt the same way. The last time I was in Oregon, the place was still there, but the big sign was gone. MUSSELMAN doesn’t have to worry about that. Their Apple Butter is really, really good.
They make good apple butter. I like to put it in Greek yogurt. It has some nice subtle spices in it. It has sugar it but not that much. It doesn't have many ingredients. I like this because there is no junk in it. The ingredients read: Apple, sugar and spices (cinnamon and cloves). Greek yogurt has a lot of protein in it. I like to add my own flavor to yogurt cause I often do not like the storecflavors. They are often too sweet. This is just sweet enough. It's also good with peanut butter. Or you can just add it to crackers or top fruit with it for an extra something.
I've seen apple butter at country stores, been offered it at restaurants and didn't really know what to do with it; especially since we don't eat bread in our house. So, when the apple butter arrived, I read the label. First of all, it only has 30 calories/TBSP. Zero fat, zero sodium, 6 grams of sugar and NO high fructose corn syrup. There were some cool "apple butter tips" on the label: combine 1/2 cup apple butter and 1/4 cup dijon mustard for the perfect pretzel dip. For a twist, dip chicken fingers or sweet potato fries in apple butter. Mix 1/2 cup apple butter with 1/2 cup marshmallow creme and serve with fresh fruit and graham crackers. Heat 1 cup apple butter, 1 cup chili sauce and meatballs for an instant appetizer Substitute for the oil in baking (banana bread, spice cake, pancakes, etc) The above all sound great. I went to the website listed on the label: musselmans.com/recipebook and found a recipe for caramalized onion pizza with bacon. The recipe uses the apple butter as the base (sauce). Wow, it was amazing! The sweet salty savory combination was a winner! Would have never thought to use apple butter in that way. So, I'm a believer. This stuff has so much more potential than to be used as simply a spread. Get some and experiment today!
I LOVE MUSSELMAN"S APPLEBUTTER. I LOVE THE TASTE OF IT. IT REMINDS ME OF BEING A LITTLE GIRL. I LOVE HAVING IT ON BUTTERED TOAST IN THE MORNINGS. AND IT IS REALLY GOOD FOR YOU. MUSSELMANS APPLEBUTTER IS LOW IN SODIUM TOO. WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN TOLD TO WATCH HIS SODIUM .WITH NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. AND IT IS A GLUTEN FREE PRODUCT. ALL THESE ARE GREAT THINGS. MUSSELMANS APPLEBUTTER IS ALSO. PRICED LOWER THAN THE OLD BRAND NAME PRODUCTS. I LOVE MUSSELMANS APPLE PRODUCTS. FROM APPLEBUTTER TO APPLE SAUCE CUP. DEFINITELY WILL BUY AGAIN.
Musselman's Apple Butter showed me that there is a difference in apple butters. For this review, I compared Musselman's to another well known brand. The difference was much greater than I expected. The first thing that I noticed was the label. In a blue stripe at the top, it proudly proclaims, “NO High Fructose Corn Syrup” and I began to wonder about the other brand I had in the fridge. Upon inspection, the other brand is made with the corn syrup but the difference doesn’t end there. The other brand’s ingredients: apples, apple cider, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup [that’s no typo, two types of corn syrup], natural flavors, salt. In contrast, Musselman's ingredients are simply: apples, sugar and spices (cinnamon and cloves). The products also differ in taste and texture. Musselman's has a great taste that’s just the right amount of sweet for me. After tasting it, the other brand was almost sickeningly sweet. Musselman's texture is rich and almost creamy in contrast to the other brand which is thin and runny by comparison. There is a difference in apple butter and Musselman's will be the brand that I stick with in the future.
Have you ever caught a whiff of something that stirs memories of when you were a child? This happened to me when I opened this jar of Musselman's Apple Butter. We didn't buy already processed apple butter when I was growing up, I think we made our own because we had a large family. The smell alone makes you want to get a spoon and dig right in, forget putting it on something first. I did restrain myself though and we made toast and spread it on it before tasting it. There after I put on a thicker layer. It has the right amount of spices and isn't overly sweet so you can indulge and the taste and creamy smoothness makes you feel like you are indulging in something you rarely have. Now, that being said, I experimented with it too. Not only is it good on toast or bread and butter, I tried it with peanut butter too and it was yummy. Want a treat? Put some on a dish or cup of vanilla ice cream, it reminded me of taking a piece of apple pie or some applesauce and and adding whipped cream. The combination of the ice cream and apple butter tastes the same minus the crust of the pie. Needless to say, we really loved being able to test out this apple butter for the Spark Reviewer program and I will be picking up a couple of jars the next time I go shopping and I will experiment putting it on more things.
This apple butter comes in a 17 oz. jar and it is labeled a Homestyle taste. It has no sodium, zero fat, no cholesterol, and only 6 grams of sugar. It does have a homestyle consistancy and also a home made taste to it. When you open the jar for the first time, it smells similar to an apple pie. This apple butter is creamy and when scooping it out of the jar, it is a rather thick mixture and does not run off of your spoon. Although it is rather thick in nature, it is also very creamy, smooth, and I would say it is very tasty. I thought that it may have a bit of a gritty texture, but it doesn't. I kind of expected a sort of ho hum taste when I selected it. It is a great complement to your morning toast. I added a little butter to my toast and then spread on this apple butter. I believe the next time that I will skip the butter and go straight to the apple butter itself. Musselman's Apple Butter, you do win the taste test!
Oh my....you are going to love this Musselman's Apple Butter! It tastes very good spread on your morning favorite toast or bagel with a fresh, hot, cup of coffee or even some hot chocolate! Some apple butter's can taste kind of pasty...but this apple butter is very smooth and super easy to spread. It contains No High Fructose Corn Syrup and is Gluten Free! It has no fat, cholesterol, sodium or preservatives. Just the natural great taste of apples with a hint of cinnamon. It makes a great afternoon snack on crackers for my granddaughter's... when they come home from school. At only 30 calories per tablespoon anyone can enjoy a little bit of this luxury. I can see why Musselman's has been in the business of making great apple butter for 80 years. Healthy and great tasting too! Who can ask for more than that?!
The jar Says " No High Fructose Corn Syrup and New Homestyle Taste" ..I like eating healthy as much as the next person but not at the expense of sacrificing the flavor. I have always loved Apple butter . Musselman's Products have always come very close to the homemade Applesauce and Spread tastes I remember as a child. I am really not sure replacing the corn syrup was a good idea. When I spread this on my toast it has a very STRONG flavor of Cloves. Not enjoyable at all. I asked my Husband to try and he agreed and said it left an after taste . I put the jar in the back of the fridge for use in the holiday baking. Would also make a great topping for baked ham.
