I have sewn most of my life, but this was my first try with an embroidery machine, and what a delight it was. The Brother PE-540D, has 35 built in Disney designs, 70 decorative designs and 5 embroidery lettering fonts. If that is not enough, this machine will hook up to your computer, where there are literally thousands of designs you can download from the internet. The machine came nicely packed and included some accessories including extra bobbins, scissors, dust cover, USB cable and wonderful instructions. The quick start guide is fantastic, but using along side of the written instructions, made understanding this machine much easier for me. With a built in threading capability and a thread cutter, the learning curve on this machine is very small. The Disney designs have a separate color card that indicates exactly what color and number of thread to use to match the design you want to do reproduce. The other built in designs are represented in the same way, but located in the manual. Once the machine is threaded, you need to place your project in the included 4 X 4 embroidery hoop, stretch and tighten it, place it in to the machine and start programming the pattern through the touch screen LCD panel. The LCD panel will tell you what color to use, push the start button, and prepared to be amazed! Once that part of the design is complete, the machine stops and tells you what color is next. The instructions are written in simple and easy to understand terms along with pictures that identify the parts that are being worked on. The machine itself also has a tutorial which shows you how to perform threading of the bobbin and the top thread, and even threading the needle. I was completely amazed with the thread cutting as well. When the project is finished, you press the button, and both the top and bottom thread is cut for you. This machine is so much fun, I can't wait to see all that I can create using the Brother PE-540D embroidery machine.

I've never embroidered anything in my life before receiving this machine. The only time I used any type of a sewing machine was in high school many years ago. So, I will say that I felt a bit intimidated, over-whelmed, and excited when I unpacked this machine. My only suggestion to 'Brother' would be to include some additional thread (color) and some sample material. This machine does come with a spool of white embroidery thread. In addition, it includes an 'Operation Manual' which takes the reader by the hand, step by step directions with excellent diagrams. I was able to follow it to a T and the result was perfection even on my first try. For those with more experience, there is an included 'Quick Reference Guide'. After following through the Operation Manual, now I only need a quick glance at the Quick Reference Guide to refresh my memory. I'll be an expert in no time! :) Also included is the 'Disney Design Guide' that is a colorful yet brief guide to the Disney characters, colors and time required for each design. The machine is light weight and takes up little space. They include several bobbins, extra needles, scissors, dust cover, USB cable, and more. Basically, everything you need to get started is included except for your material and embroidery threads (they do include a white embroidery thread). The touch panel can be controlled by using a stylus pen or using your finger. It's so simple because you can basically scroll through the designs and choose what you want. There are free designs as well as many that can be purchased online. The machine will also take embroidery cards. On another note, keep in mind there are more designs included such as fonts, welcomes, flowers, flower baskets, heart, and many many more. Lots of fun for any age and very useful for gazillions of projects!

This machine is the neatest thing! It's actually pretty fast and does an excellent job. Because it's easy to use and lots of fun, I've pretty much embroidered everything in my house even if it didn't need it. It comes with everything you need to get started except the stabilizing material. It only comes with 1 spool of thread (white). It's electronic so it has a touch screen. There's a help file on the screen that shows you how to thread it, how to load the bobbin, how to change the needle, and a few other basic things. It's already preloaded with 105 designs, some are Disney, but you can hook it up to your computer and purchase more designs off the internet. It's also self threading and self cutting. There's a red light that only turns green when you have completed the necessary steps to start sewing your patterns. When you select a pattern there's options to reposition them and resize them. Then the carriage will move and it will show you exactly where your pattern is going to go so that you don't overlap anything. The only thing I've had a problem with so far is that I can't get the patterns to resize small enough for some things that I want. This machine has so many features that I have yet to discover and use. I'm going to try to embroider some frames next.

Handy Embroidery Machine!

The Brother Disney embroidery machine is super handy to have around the house. It comes with 35 built-in Disney embroidery designs, 70 decorative designs, and 5 built-in font styles, so there are many variations of what you can create! In a 2 hour span, it was possible to complete 2 baby projects. The ease of attaching and removing the embroidery unit was simple. The one color embroidery alphabet is also simple and straight forward (attached is a photo example). I like that it uses regular spool of thread rather than expensive embroidery spools or specialized threads. While embroidering Mickey Mouse, I accidentally shut off the machine, and had to restart. If you know the stitch number, you could enter it in, since the machine allows for shut down mid project. This is a great feature. However I didn't intend to shut down, so I had to take another approach. After re-entering the pre-programmed Mickey Mouse pattern, I was able to restart based on color, rather than stitch number and complete the project. I feared I would have to take the project out and restart from the very beginning, or try to realign back into the hoop after "fooling the machine into thinking I had completed all the previous steps." Imagine my relief when I selected the right color and it continued along without having to take my project out of the hoop and realign. I also like the compact size of this embroidery system and the simplicity to use. I have a Singer Futura XL 400 sewing and embroidery machine which is much bigger and more complex than the Brother PE540D. So this machine is very handy.

It was a bit daunting when I received the Brother Embroidery Machine, PE540D. from the Sparks review team. I had learned basic sewing in my Home Economics class in high school many years ago than I care to remember and had a machine of my own briefly but I loved the thought of embroidering the clothing I already have and also to add a special touch for gifts for the family and friends. First of all, it is a beautiful machine, not too heavy and doesn't take up any more space than a standard sewing machine. It comes with the supplies to get you started but I am definitely going to purchase more bobbins and also a variety of the proper weight thread. There is also a quick start guide which I found invaluable. Step by step instructions with informative pictures made me feel much more at ease with using the machine. There are a lot of built in designs and the Disney ones I'm sure I will use a lot as I have several family members who are Disney-philes..... I also plan to use the lettering feature a lot to add names or just words along with my finished products. I know I have not nearly covered all the fabulous features of this machine and what it can do and also what I can create myself. Would definitely recommend this product for the experienced seamstress who wants to expand into embroidery to the relative novice like myself....

Ok so I will admit this is my first machine, although I have embroidered in the past, by hand. This is way better! I was super excited when my machine arrived as I have little ones who love custom made items or having their names on their clothes. One reason I really wanted this for myself was being able to monogram the towels! What I liked about this machine was how easy it was to figure out. At least I am already used to using a computer, so obviously I have that other plus on my side. But there aren't many pieces to assemble and it came with a nice thick book of instructions which helped immensely. I will say this as advice to anyone who hasn't used one before, I really think all you need, honestly, is the desire to do this type of work. If you can find a friend to help you set it up and give you some pointers, it will probably be smoother. Remember, you can also try your favorite craft store, some have classes if you're interested in learning more advanced techniques. Even your local Walmart store in the fabrics/crafts section the employees usually know all they need to help you pick out any items you may wish to purchase to go along with your new investment. You can also probably find tons of YouTube videos, information on-line, including other images, etc. This machine really lived up to the hype and I'm looking forward to my summer stay-cation so I can start working on more projects. Have fun!!

I love to do crafts of all kinds, and know how to hand-embroider. I've always wanted to own an embroidery machine, but could not afford one. I was a little bit skeptical at first, since my first experience with Brother was a lemon sewing machine (it only truly likes to work in reverse!). Compared to other machines, the price point on this one just cannot be beat! The manual is more than a little intimidating. Some of it is very roughly translated-to-English descriptions, but I muddled through to the point I was willing to give it an actual try. Putting the parts together was much worse on paper than in real life - a simple snap-on to the bottom part, and then snap on the hoop and I was ready to roll. On to the pleasant option of which design to try first. My experience with the automatic needle threader was more frustration than helpful, and I found myself wishing I could take it off so I could reach the #6 threading spot easier. The instructions seem to overcomplicate it, so I'll try it again in another way viewed on a video and see if I don't want to take a hammer to it. On the embroidery - you do have to change the thread a lot to get the desired results. Thankfully, like most Brother machines, the threading sequence is printed right on the machine so you aren't trying to remember if the thread goes over or under that metal piece or around this little piece. We used a rayon type thread, which has a nice sheen to it. Since I was giving the machine a test run, we did our tests on simple (translation: cheap) muslin fabric with tear-away stabilizer on the back. I have included some pictures on our results. I wish we could load more photos, but I guess that would overload the website. (I also tried to take a video, but failed miserably for some reason.) I would advise users to buy the best thread you can afford, because one of our cheaper colors caused the needle to break because of thread burrs hitting the eye of the needle. SNAP!! That was the one actual complaint I had about this machine - we had to stop and put on a new needle of course, and we were on Color #3 of a six-color design. We could not go BACK to Color #3 and continue - we had to scrap the hoop contents and start over from the beginning. I would have liked the option to continue where we left off, but couldn't. The embroidery is not perfection - there were little gaps between the colored thread and the outlines on a couple designs we tried, but nothing overly bad. If I wasn't fine-tooth-combing it, I might not even notice. We even tried one of the six-color designs in only ONE color, just to see how it would look (and to save thread!) - it looked surprisingly good! For those new to machine embroidery, the machine will have connecting threads by color - in other words, if there are five areas that use black, there will be thread running between those five areas. It is normal and perfectly ok. This machine starts with a few anchoring stitches - just trim away the connected threads - they are NOT part of your design. That goes for the front AND the back. Use either embroidery style (like the stork design) scissors or even a seam ripper to get in nice and close without cutting the embroidery or the material. Note that the directions say to IRON your item before you embroider. That is very true. Otherwise, the needle can sort of draw in a wrinkle or fold and you will not be able to remove it with ironing in your final project. We did not iron our test items because they were a test, but with our Mickey photo, you can see the fabric puckering because we did not iron first. So note that the ironing is an important step on non-practice items. There are several Disney and Pixar licensed designs included with this model. There are five fonts as well. I wish there were more, and you can bet that fonts are the FIRST thing I am going to look for to download! Yes, you can just download more options, designs, fonts and frames to this machine. Well, to your computer, then transfer them to your machine via USB port. I have also learned as of today that there is software available to even digitize your own designs, which will create truly custom designs for your machine. The Brother uses files in the PES format (there are a LOT of embroidery formats out there, so be sure you stick with the right type for the machine). Brother has included their design library website location on the front of the machine, apparently knowing they will be creating an insatiable thirst for more designs and fonts! There are many YouTube videos available on how to use this machine, in case you are not into reading roughly translated manuals (even though I recommend at minimum familiarizing yourself with the machine via the manuals before trying using it). I've been looking at some today, and have already learned some new tricks. All in all, I truly love this machine. It does everything you could want (except large designs - that will take a different model - the maximum embroidery area for this one is 4x4, even though the hoop is larger than that) and does it very nicely. I am thrilled and extremely grateful to have had the chance to own it! In fact, since trying it out, my mind has been racing as to all the things I could make (or try to make) with this, and I haven't done a lick of actual work. My daughter also tried out a design and had no trouble with it either. We are in the process of making her first quilt, and had been wondering how we could get some of the words she wanted to include on her fabric as part of the design. Now we know! We'll be creating our own blocks. I seriously can recommend this machine to anyone who enjoys making custom gifts or even wants to start selling embroidered items as a side business. This is definitely for home use - the size and speed are not going to work for a high-volume business. But this home user is incredibly happy with the machine, and can barely wait to try some new fonts! You WILL enjoy this one!

I have completed a few Embroidery designs as well as embroidery/applique projects and I am very pleased with the performance of the PE540D, the auto needle threader is a wondrous thing to behold. It runs quietly. On the negative side, the selection of provided Disney designs is rather limited but does contain at least one of each of the FAB 5 with one of Daisy Duck and and a sampling of Pixar including Cars, Incredibles Nemo, Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. It would be nice to have a faster speed. Attaching the hoop is easy, but removing it is difficult. The instructions for removing the hoop are simple but not so in practice. Perhaps the addition of a spring to pop the frame off would be a nice factory addition. A lot of the after market designs available differ between 4x4 and 5x7. Considering the speed and design size I would have been happier with 770. All in all I am happy with the PE540D.

I selected this machine so that I could try to get my logo done with it. Frankly I'm still having issues with that but I still have a lot of learning to do and for me that comes with practice and experimentation. This came with many items I did not expect like a spool of thread, pair of scissors. The advanced needle threading system is wonderful if you have issues threading needles like I do. The hoop and extra binding material is great to get you started. This also came with three individual books that have helpful information in them. The help feature is very useful it does give step by step direction on how to wind a bobbin to which color thread. The guide on the machine tells you the color number when you need to change the colors out for the next part of your design. You can use substitute colors in place of the colors the design call for but I would recommend you be careful doing that because you would hate to have the wrong color in wrong place. The website www.ibroidery.com has many more designs to choose from. I am going to be experimenting with this for some time and hope I can get some very creative project done in time for Christmas. Pictured below are the machine with the accessories and some of the designs.
