Personnel: Ruth Brown (vocals); Bill Williams (guitar); Charles "C.I." Williams (alto saxophone); Red Holloway (tenor saxophone); Bobby Forrester (Hammond B-3 organ); Clarence "Tootsie" Bean (drums).Recorded live at the Cinegrill, Hollywood, California on June 10 & 11, 1988. Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand.1988's HAVE A GOOD TIME is Ruth Brown's comeback album, recorded when she was fresh from her star-making turn in John Waters' rock & roll comedy HAIRSPRAY. It's a live set that showcases Brown's equal facility with swing-era standards, tear-in-your-beer ballads, and rockin' blues.Brown's backed here by an excellent Hammond organ-led small combo featuring Red Holloway (another veteran of the '50s R&B scene) on tenor sax. He takes an extended, particularly inspired solo during Brown's hushed reading of "When I Fall in Love." Brown herself is in amazing voice throughout, whether whooping her way through one of her old hits-the wonderfully lewd "5-10-15 Hours," her signature "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean"-or completely re-imagining a more contemporary song like Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind."
