My husband and I debated getting another cat as coyotes have become prominent in our city area. Our cats had all been indoor/outdoor, and knew they loved the outdoors. We did finally adopt a rescue cat. After about a month we decided to try this harness/leash. His response, once it was on was to plop down and not move. But when I picked him up and we went outside, eventually he couldn't resist the scents, sights, etc. and began exploring. He loves his backyard. We go out twice a day, about an hour each. I love seeing how intent he becomes, his eyes alert, ears perked up, and nose active, stimulation he doesn't get indoors. I follow him, and have chairs placed for when he sits and observes. As the sun goes down he loves hunting crickets and large roaches, but I kept him from an injured bird and large toad. He even can climb trees, (but only to a certain height). He begins crying when he knows it's time to go out. Thank you for a great product for our Poncho.
I was walking my cat in a new area when I noticed he stopped to smell something then backed away obviously spooked about what he smelled. Right then my son pet him and our cat freaked out and lost it. He was scrambling to get away obviously experiencing a fight or flight moment. As he was pulling this harness squeezed tightly around his body and did not allow him to escape. Let me tell you- he did everything he could to get away and I thought for sure he would slip out, but he didnt! My cat is a 16lb strong young Maine Coon and he easily slipped out of the other harnesses I tried on him with a little twist. This was a full on jumping, flinging, panicked kitty who thought he had been grabbed by a predator. I used a size medium and it felt pretty snug... but boy am I glad it was snug! After he calmed down we removed the harness which was still in place and he didn't occur any injuries. Happy ending and a very impressive harness!
I have two larger cats and I can NEVER find a harness in the store that will fit. They are each about 15-20 pounds and the large is perfect! I am so pleased that I found a harness that fits them well! Also...the regular shipping was super fast. I ordered it late Sunday evening and the product was delivered Wednesday morning. Overall very pleased with my purchase!
We've had success with our male tabby. Started when he was about 10 mos old, and he is now at about a year (12 lbs.). He was a rescue from the wild, so has experience with the outdoors, and the only issue we had was the very first outing, when he attempted to bolt and unexpectedly found the end of the bungee. Can you say "Tasmanian devil?!" After a few attempts with a medium size harness, he got very comfortable with the system, and actually welcomes the excursions when we get it out for him. Only problem is the so-called lock ring that is supposed to hold the slider in place. It fails. Had to add a triple-wrapped rubber band behind the rubber ring to keep the sliding metal rings from moving to the rear and opening up the neck loops. Tried removing this add-on, now that he's used it for a few weeks, but it still loosens, since the little rubber ring fails to provide enough friction to maintain its position. See photo. Otherwise, we are impressed with the overall design, and we are grateful to finally have an indoor cat, with outdoor (supervised) freedom. We have lost a couple of cats to the outdoors for various reasons (predators, mostly). Hang in there if you are just starting out. It CAN work for some cats, evidently.
