Recorded between 1951 and 1957. RADIO FAVORITES '51-'57 contains 14 tracks. Country's greatest singing duo, the Louvin Brothers, has long been held in high regard by both musicians and devoted fans of country music. Until recently, however, the general public had little access to the group's recordings. Among the first and best of the compact discs to reverse this trend was RADIO FAVORITES, a 1993 release from the Country Music Foundation. The disc collects 14 previously unreleased live radio performances, including ten from the group's 1955-1957 tenure with the Grand Old Opry. The Louvins divided their career commitments between gospel and secular music, and RADIO FAVORITES cleverly mirrors this dichotomy, presenting seven gospel numbers and seven secular tunes (on the original vinyl release, each grouping had its own side). Neither set disappoints: in fact, part of the Louvins' tremendous appeal lay in the conflict between the sacred and profane embodied in their music. Beyond this content, however, is the sound of two perfectly wedded voices. Each of the 14 tracks included here is among the group's best compositions, making RADIO FAVORITES a solid introduction to the Louvins' remarkable body of work.
