i had bought guitar hero first, found out i had to buy extra remotes for the microphone to work. I returned and bought rockband 2. Everything is wireless so 4 can play at the same time!! THis is great!
Anticipation of this product is the main reason we got the Wii, and it has mostly lived up to expectations. Packaging was good, compact but well protective. Assembly was fairly easy. The only problem is that the drum set legs do not lock into the base, so can sometimes come apart when moved. Also, the cord on the 'bass pedal' is a little short. I found that stretching it before installing helped a bit. Eventually I bought a short headphone extension cord for it. Drum height has excellent adjustment but you don't want to do that often. Find the stool you will use to play, adjust the drums to that, and then always use that setup. The drums are great for the price; I would investigate the add on 'skins' to protect the heads and reduce the noise of playing. The bass pedal is a big improvement over the original one, but upgrading the pedal, particularly to one which allows another (the original) pedal to be plugged in will help out as you get better. There are add-on cymbal kits which look good, but I'm not sure they will improve the play any. The new guitar is great, and the corded microphone is ok. I've seen microphones which have the controls built in, so you don't need to use the standard Wii remote to get started, an annoyance with this one. Wireless for the drums and guitar is accomplished via a 'dongle' for each which plugs into the USB ports on the Wii. 2 ports, 2 dongles, so if you have anything else which needs to plug in, it could be a problem. A USB hub could be tried, but some things may not work that way. The microphone plugs into the guitar dongle, so that is not an issue. The USB ports on the Wii are in back, and the dongle cords are short. So, to 'connect' the controllers and the game together (initially and occasionally thereafter), requires pushing the button on the dongle, difficult in some setups where access to the back of the game is limited. I've been looking for short USB extentions to get the dongles to the front for easy access, but have not found them yet. The Wii has very little memory built in, and Rock Band songs can be downloaded and would need to be stored. Get a good SD card; 2G should be good (I've heard that bigger ones may not work with the Wii). The hardware instructions are minimal, basically pictures. They were adequate for the limited assembly needed. The software is pretty good as well. But the instructions on how to use the game are pretty limited. For instance, the ads state 'over 80 songs', but when you bring up the game, you can only get to 20 of them. The rest are there, but you have to 'unlock' them, and there is no indication on how you do that. Basically, you have to go 'on tour' and either play 'gigs' or win 'challanges' to unlock the additional songs. And even doing that requires trial and error to figure out how they work. Up to 4 people can play on the game, 1 on drums, one on vocals, and 2 on guitars (1 as guitar and 1 as bass). Each person can choose their level - easy, medium, hard or expert. Easy is a good introduction, and medium is doable. Higher I have not managed yet. Other than vocals, the interface is the standard 'scrolling fretboard' used by this and Guitar Hero. Following this is not hard with a little practice. Vocals is a line across the screen where the words scroll and a pitch meter shows what pitch is expected and what you are using. I would say the discriminator is very poor, since just about anything I tried was rated as 'awesome', unlike the other game interfaces which require great precision. There are 2 local modes of play, 'quickplay' and 'practice'. In the first, you are 'on stage' and can get points for playing songs, which are recorded. Of course, you can also get kicked off the stage if you do poorly. In practice, you can play parts of the song or the whole thing, for a percentage which is not recorded. I use a small 'white board' with dry erase marker to track my progress. Hooking to the internet is a must. Not only can you download 20 more songs for free, but a total of nearly 600 (most seem to be $2 each). Plus, this allows you to do 'challanges' to unlock songs, tour your band to 'earn money and fans' and play in other bands with people around the world. There does not appear to be any way to communicate with these people though, perhaps a good thing. We got this online, delivered. This was a good experiance, timely and without hassle. The only odd thing was that the shipping label was just slapped onto the store box. Still, the standard packaging was good enough that it arrived without damage. And unusually, there was not even significant damage to the box. Overall, I would say this was a great game, with high potential for fun by yourself or with 2 or possibly 3 friends (I'm not impressed by the vocals, but it may be just the thing for others). As it comes, it is a great start, and there are plenty of enhancements you can add to keep things fresh, from more songs, to add ons and 'real instrument' controllers.
We purchased Rockband for our kids but soon discovered that it is truly a family affair. We really end up spending a lot more time together playing in the band or just watching and laughing and singing along. I would really recommend this for any family that wants to have fun together. Our only disappointment was that there are only 2 USB ports on the wii but you need 3 to plug in all the parts to Rockband. We called the manufacturer assuming something was missing. They readily agreed to send us a connector to add a USB, but denied that anything was missing from the package. EA Games designed it for the Wii but you need to purchase that additional part before you leave the store or be prepared to sit out one of the band members until you get one.
We bought guitar hero band kit for christmas and had so many problems that we returned it. I ordered Rock Band 2. This was so much easier to set up. We've had no problems and the whole family has a lot of fun playing it.
This special edition bundle is better than the first Rock Band's bundle. It has online play and the contents are more durable and longer lasting. The wireless drum set is tough-armored while the Fender Stratocaster Wireless Guitar is dyed in a wooden-sunburst. The microphone remains the same rate as the other. These instruments are also compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour. Don't let up now! Buy this bundle today for a whopping $190.
This was an awesome addition to our Wii system. It offers many hours of fun and it is good to know that there our other music that can be added to the system. It is fun for all ages!!!
My gal just bought this, it's a lot more fun than the first Rock Band for the Wii. Kept us entertained for a good while.
My little sister got this set for Christmas and while I was at home she got the entire family addicted to it. My sister (17), myself (25), My Mom and Dad (they wld kill me if I put their age haha) We all played this for HOURS and I didn't want to put it down. It is now March and I still cannot seem to find it anywhere... not even on ebay. I have even thought about buying the game and the accessories seperately but cannot find the guitar. One day, I will be a proud owner but until then I will continue rocking out at friends' houses!
The guitar is a little beefier than our comparable Guitar Hero model. Setup was straightforward. We had a little trouble getting the game to pick up when the pedal for the drum set was pressed, and determined it may be our carpeted floors. That said, being able to get the whole family playing together is loads of fun. Haven't used the game disc- my little ones aren't ready for some of the bands and lyrics yet.
I bought Rock Band 2 for the kids for this Christmas. The actual setup was pretty easy, and it really brought the family together while we were playing. Problem is the guitar dongle quite working after three days, hence the guitar quite working. Had to call EA warranty to solve the issue, on hold for hour and a half to speak to somebody and I am now in week 2 of waiting for replacement dongle AND guitar. So, only the drums are able to be played since the microphone also plugs into the guitar dongle. Needless to say the game hasnt been played in 2 weeks, and wont be until we get the replacements for the guitar. Its great while its working, but EA must be overloaded with warranty issues as the whole process with them has not been fun. Overall, great product, maybe I got a lemon.
