Writing this review to help those who are skeptical of the bad reviews. It took me about an hour to assemble. Direction are pictures, very simple. Construction is solid for a patio storage. My only recommendation is the hinges are riveted to tight, I lubed it and hit it with a hammer to get it to move freely before installation. The first patio storage unit I bought was a suncast, I put it together than apart and returned it. That storage unit was junk. This Rubbermaid is awesome. Hope this helps.
I ordered 2 deck boxes, thinking that's what I wanted. My husband thought it would make the deck too crowded. 'Good thing I ordered 2, though, since 1 lid was damaged. 'Made the decision to return 1 easy. The box looks nice and stores 5 to 6 folding chairs nicely with a little room to spare. The box should take no strength to put together. If you think you have to fight with it, you're probably doing it wrong, like I was. Pieces pretty much slide toghether, then are held together with screws, etc. Put together on a soft surface, though, like a towel, so you don't scratch the surfaces. Even the cardboard it came in caused a bit of scratching when I tried to use that as my surface. It's strong enough to sit on, and keeps the water out.
Assembled most of it myself. Needed a few minutes of help to connect the bottom with the front and back and attaching the corner pieces. Just took my time, about 2.5 hours didn't use a drill. This included unpacking and making sure all the parts were there. Parts were very well labelled. However, I agree with one of the comments that in this day and age there should be a video.
The item came quickly, however the box was damaged. Our lid was pushed in on 3 sides at the very corners. I have since contacted Rubbermaid for a replacement. I will follow up on that later. Otherwise, it was easy to assemble. My husband had it completed in about 45 minutes. In other reviews, folks mention it being used as a bench seat. My 10 year old sat on it, and it created white marks in the lid where screws are located. Not unsightly, but not sturdy enough for extra seating. Love the look! And it holds quite a bit.
Lots of assembly. Lid does not lie flat or shut completely. The lid is very obviously bowed up about 5/8" on each side, with only the low point in the center actually touching the storage box. I wish it was like other Rubbermaid products which shut securely to keep pests and dust out. This defect compromises the functionality of an otherwise good looking product.
Nice and big. Somewhat easy assembly (instructions where mislabeled parts and fairly vague) would have been a higher rating though. Except the box came trashed and oddly taped as if this was a previously returned product. Some small damage to lid. The damage was minor enough that I just didn't want the hassle so I kept it. Recommend the product not the supplier. I believe this came from a third party supplier
Poor packaging so the top of the deck box was damaged. This us the second time
I ordered this item online and when it arrived, I was shocked that there was no protective packaging in the box. No styrofoam to protect the edges of the product, etc. I took all the pieces out without much inspection only to find that there was no hardware in the box. I contacted Rubbermaid and they told me this was a common problem recently and that they would send me out the hardware. I was also missing the instructions which they said they would send separately. A week later, the hardware arrived but no hasp. I also noticed when I started assembling the box that several panels were scuffed and the corners of the lid were damaged. No doubt due to the manner in which it was packed. I called Rubbermaid AGAIN and reported the parts that I was still missing or that were damaged. They took the information and said they would send the parts out right away. Today I received the hasp, another damaged lid (once again the corners were damaged due to no protective packaging), and the WRONG panels for the box. They actually sent me parts for 1Q12 instead of 1Q06! I went to Sam's and found a Ketter patio box for 20% less. It was larger and in my opinion constructed better. I will be returning the Rubbermaid box after a month of frustration.
First, I will state that Wal-Mart has been very helpful with regards to this product. The first shipment was missing the side panels and very beat up. Wal-Mart sent me another and it arrived without supports, corners, and finishing pieces. Ultimately I was able to make one deck box from the two shipments. Let me state that putting together was not an easy task... Parts of it was fairly easy, the rest was almost impossible. Utilizing two shipments to get one complete assembly was frustrating. Once it was together, the top wouldn't go down because the front panel was warped. Since it is plastic and I was not going to go through the process to disassemble, I decided since it was plastic that the panel will align once the sun hits it. I will not know if this works for a little but as its not quite hot enough out yet. Very poor quality for a Rubbermaid product, poor packaging. Missing parts on one can be dismissed as error. Missing parts on two illustrates poor quality control and packing at Rubbermaid.
Items was delivered damaged twice.
