There are many good programs that are being piloted and implemented throughout the United States and abroad. Some address societal issues at large, such as the prevalence of violence in the media. Other programs focus upon the local community, like creating after-school programs; some address family issues, such as the impact of violence and abuse that occurs in families; while others address individual coping skills, helping at-risk individuals with psychotherapy. Some of these programs have been subjected to research and program evaluation studies to determine if they really work. Many of them do work, while for other programs, the results are equivocal. The core ingredient in many of these programs is to facilitate improved coping and healthy relationships. For at-risk individuals, simply having one healthy trusting relationship, with somebody the person can turn to when the chips are down, hope is lost, and options are perceived as extinguished, can make all the difference in the world. These programs create multiple opportunities for these healthy attachments to grow. The more quality programs, the more opportunities for such bonding. In addition, just because one program in program evaluation studies is shown across the grouped data to be of questionable utility, there may be individual cases where that benefit has been realized. We seek to create parachutes for those who are falling.
