Tim Burton + Johnny Depp + Music = Sheer Genious This movie is dark, yet the light music balances it out perfectly, I highly recomend it.
This is by far one of my most favorite movies! I love how Johnny Depp brought out his inner Singing voice in it, who knew he is such a talented singer?
I love Johnny Depp and his interpretation of Captain Jack Sparrow. I adored Helena Bonham-Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. And who isn't familiar with Tim Burton's Countless films, his most recent with Depp and Bonham-Carter in Willy Wonka? But unlike most pop-culture fans, I went to see this film for Stephen Sondheim. Who is he? He wrote the gorgeous, breathtaking music that sweeps across every scene and gives Todd's dark London it's ominous tone. For those of you who aren't familiar with the plot, it is the Addams Family meets Hannibal Lecter. This film's subject is not for the weak stomach. And if you are a fan of Burton or Depp remember, Sweeney Todd was a broadway musical starring Len Cariou and Angela Landsbury more than thirty years ago! For what this broadway musical gone Hollywood is, Burton did an OUTSTANDING JOB! For a fan of the musical for more than ten years, I could not have asked for a better adaption to screen. Not only did Johnny Depp hold his own musically, but he stands up to Len Cariou's talent! The Mrs. Lovett, who's role originally belonged to Angela Landsbury, is revived by Helena Bonham-Carter. With more softness and less vulgarity as Landsbury portrayed, Bonham-Carter delivers an equally astounding performance. I highly recommend this film for musical lovers and if you are a Depp/Burton fan, be forwarned It is 98% song and 2% dialogue. But Depp and Burton do NOT disappoint and the cast delivers. What I loved most about this film . . . The music is gorgeous. I could listen all day to Johnny sing Sondheim. I loved seeing Bellatrix Lestrange, Professor Snape, and Peter Pettigrew all working together. Where was Jason Isaacs? I want to know. What I hated about this film . . . Victim's blood spraying across the scene with every sliced throat. but you can't have Burton do Sweeney Todd without it.
this is such a perfect part for johnny. he is the perfect actor to pull this one off. if you like black horror, this is it. you will be in shock to see some ot the scenes. i don't want to give it away,but if you love johnny depp, get this.
great movie..didn't realize was a musical but enjoyed it. first couple minutes were weird but then caught your attention. would buy it again.
I've heard so many bad reviews from my friends, but this movie was absolutley phenomenal. One of Tim Burton's best, hands down.
This was a movie that I really enjoyed in the theater and couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD!! Tim Burton really enhanced the stage play wonderfully... if you like musicals/stage performances this is a must see !! All the actors / actresses were great.... it was very well written....
The movie itself was awesome. Johnny Depp was at his best in this. So was Helena. It brought music to a horror film. I applaud Tim Burton. WOW!
I have never been "fist in line" to purchase a DVD release, but I found myself anxiously awaiting the arrival of this DVD after having viewed the film in the theater multiple times. Having been a fan of the original Broadway show, it was interesting to see what was done with the film. Although the cast does an adequate job vocally (kudos to surprising vocals by Johnny Depp), the score was missing some integral parts from the stage; mainly the chorus, that would have helped fill in some of the blanks that the film left open. I am always happy to see how a stage production can really open up when a film version is created, and I was not disappointed with the entire look of the film...except perhaps for the hairdo for Mr. Depp. The DVD transfer is just as lush as the film looked in the theater, with all the subtle shadows and muted tones as sharp as they were on the big screen. My only complaint with the DVD is the sound quality, which isn't as deep and full as it sounded in the theater (and yes, I heard it through a home theater system, so I had all the bells and whistles for full sound at my disposal!) With the film having been a musical, I would have thought that more attention would have been paid to the final product in that area. I purchased two copies and both have an annoying popping sound throughout "Pretty Women" which I hope future "pressings" will have eliminated. Overall, the DVD is worth viewing, even if you haven't the memory of seeing it on the big screen. I highly recommend the DVD to Depp fans, even if your aren't in to musicals as such, because Johnny is dark, evil, and humorously twisted....all set to music. What else could you ask for?
I was surprized and disappointed at the same time. While I liked Chicago this one let me down. Maybe it was the cast of characters, I'm not certain. I'm sure that it was a stretch for the actors in their parts, but it was a stretch for me to watch. Sorry, this was a downer for me.
